how some group started supported liberal/progressive political causes?

If you view yourself as a member of a group and you want to understand the group opposed to you, it's a tough thing to get right. You project your views of how bad the other group really is onto their every motive, and suddenly what's true for a minority of them becomes true for all of them.

(Esp. as your group changes focus. Abortion isn't a huge cause right now. Race relations are. So the analysis of what the One True Cause has Always Been has changed. Saying it's all one or the other or even just those two is so simplistic as to be ridiculous. It's like having somebody in 1850s London writing a "this is the true analysis of culture of South Asia and the real reasons they don't want white rule.&quot
