Bill O'Reilly Opposes NY Marijuana Decrim Because it Might Reduce Racial Profiling

This week's exciting news that Gov. Cuomo and Mayor Bloomberg are backing an effort to end New York City's mindless marijuana arrest crusade didn't exactly result in a round of applause at the FOX News studios. Here's Bill O'Reilly babbling about it:

http://www.alternet.org/newsandviews/article/943882/bill_o%27reilly_opposes_ny_marijuana_decrim_because_it_might_reduce_racial_profiling/

O'Reilly says the cops "know who the wise guys are," and they're only bothering people who deserve it. That sounds reassuring, oh, except for the fact that NYPD has already searched more young black men than they even have in the entire city. So yeah, they might be catching some of these "wise guys" as O'Reilly so eloquently describes them, but only because they're also searching every other young black man in the city. There is no clever strategy behind it. They're just searching all the black dudes. Stop trying to make it sound sophisticated, Bill.

But the real problem with O'Reilly's logic, and it also highlights the irony of whole ridiculous situation, is that there's no component in this new marijuana decriminalization proposal that would actually require police to stop constantly racially profiling everyone they see. That's not even what this is. ..................(more)

It's about putting as many "minorities" in private for-profit prisons, taking them off voting rolls, as possible and as expeditiously as possible.

He equates marijuana use to "hippies" who don't want to do anything but go to rock concerts and get high. He thinks anyone who smokes marijuana is a jobless bum who has nothing going for them.

I know of some very prominent people who smoke marijuana. Many hold extremely important jobs in the medical, education, finance and government sectors. If it weren't for the fear of losing their jobs, having these people come out in support of decriminalization or legalization would do more for the movement than anything.

Nor does his quote about 'wise guys' back up the headline.

I think it's much simpler. He's just lame. He's oh so concerned 'about the children' and doesn't want anybody to have more access to drugs than they already do. I don't t think it has anything at all to do with racial profiling.

It's a shame, too, because he used to occasionally make statements on his show that were somewhat sympathetic libertarian positions on pot. 10 years ago he didn't seem all that far off from somebody who would support this measure in NY. It's too bad he went the other way.
