(((Echoes))), Exposed: The Secret Symbol Neo-Nazis Use to Target Jews Online

https://mic.com/articles/144228/echoes-exposed-the-secret-symbol-neo-nazis-use-to-target-jews-online#.R2SiTawgJ

In the early days of the social web, putting someone's name in multiple parentheses was meant to give that person a cute virtual hug. Today, it's something far more sinister.

Neo-Nazis, anti-Semites and white nationalists have begun using three sets of parentheses encasing a Jewish surname — for instance, (((Fleishman))) — to identify and target Jews for harassment on blogs and major social media sites like Twitter. As one white supremacist tweeted, "It's closed captioning for the Jew-blind."

Jonathan Weisman, deputy Washington editor for the New York Times, wrote about his experience as a victim of this harassment in a May 26 story.

"Hello ((Weisman))" it began after Weisman tweeted a Washington Post article about Donald Trump titled "This Is How Fascism Comes to America."

It will eventually make its way into other forms of online communication. Anti-Semitism isn't a real bigotry to some, so it won't matter to them. Should be interesting now that the ADL is setting a task force to look into the anti-Semitic attacks against journalists.

The act of encasing these parentheses around a Jewish name crosses a red line. Whistle-blowing Jews is some nasty shit that should be stopped.

They make it easier to monitor them. That unique text string is easy to search out.

‘Coincidence Detector’ plugin automatically highlighted Jewish names, among them Bernie Sanders and Benjamin Netanyahu

As Mic reported Thursday, the Chrome plugin highlighted Jewish names with multiple parentheses, or what the “alt-right” — a fringe conservative-white nationalist movement — calls an “(((echo))).” The so-called Coincidence Detector was available free in the Google Chrome store.

The product description read: “Coincidence Detector can help you detect total coincidences about who has been involved in certain political movements and media empires.” There was even a suggestions tab to submit Jewish names to be added to the algorithm.

Chrome allows any developer to create and add an app to their store, offering step by step instructions on how to complete the process.

The plugin, last updated Thursday, was being used by 2,518 people and had a five-star rating (based on 94 reviews).

Seriously some stuff is too dismal to totally take in on a conscious level.

I don't handle this well. But I try to be self aware and face my denial. I hate to see some stuff. Awful.

...the key word is tried.

Earlier this week, Mic reported on (((echoes))), the signaling method used by the Neo-Nazi alt-right movement to identify and target Jewish internet users by putting their names in triple parenthesis.

Anti-semitic white nationalists also wield the symbol through the use of a Google chrome extension, known as "Coincidence Detector", which draws from a preprogrammed list of Jewish surnames.

The coverage got the attention of prominent Jewish writers, who immediately decided to appropriate the symbol for use with their own names in an attempt to preemptively subvert the efforts of hateful trolls.

I will never use parentheses for hugs again. This is very disturbing.

A writer who I follow on Twitter has those triple parentheses around his name, which startled me. I wonder if he knows, or if this is only appearing to his viewers?
