Even Republicans understand that there aren't enough racist white people to win national elections.

From the LA Times:

Aside from the social implications in a nation with a wrenching history
of racial strife, Trump’s escalating attacks on the judge have unsettled
top Republicans who are fretting over the party’s fate in November. They fear Trump
will damage GOP candidates nationwide if he fails to tone down the
rhetoric that drew a big following among Republican primary voters but
might backfire in the general election.
