Chinese students assaulted by woman in Arizona for speaking Mandarin on the train

Police in Arizona have arrested one woman who was provoked to punch a couple of Chinese students after overhearing them speaking Mandarin inside a light rail train.

Xiaolin Shi, an undergraduate student at Arizona State University, and her male companion were having a conversation in Mandarin Chinese while taking the train back to their college in Tempe on the night of May 20th -- their choice of language was apparently enough to anger another passenger.

"I don't speak Chinese, shut the fuck up!" 22-year-old Kalie Rutledge shouted at the couple, also telling Shi: "Bitch, go fucking back to China!"

The Chinese couple tried to leave the train at the next stop, but Rutledge came at them and punched Shi right in the face.

"I lost consciousness for a few seconds, and then I found myself on the ground with blood all over my face," Shi told China Daily. Rutledge also punched her male companion in the face before taking off.

Mon Jun 6, 2016, 04:16 PM

The chart is of hate crimes against "most frequently targeted groups". It's not supposed to be a "positive situation" or a "negative situation". It is taken from The 2014 Hate Crime Report compiled by the LA County Commission on Human Relations that examines hate crime data.

As noted above, Asians constitute 5.5% nationally - the report for LA County has Asians at 1% - it wouldn't be visible on the scale of that graph.

I don't presume that you are good at math, but you are looking at a chart where the increment on the Y - axis is in units of 50, and the total number of crimes in the most recent year is around 300 (by adding up the individual lines).

What that means, is that "Asians" (which by the way overlaps with LGBT as do all ethnic groups) would be a teeny-tiny little line of around one-fifth the smallest increment on the graph.

But, no, of course, the exclusion of a group which doesn't even rate a tick on the graph MUST be the result of some kind of bias, in presentation of "Most Frequently Targeted Groups".

It must be because Southern California Public Radio has it in for Asians. http://www.scpr.org/news/2015/09/24/54616/hate-crimes-in-la-county-inch-up-in-2014/

Clearly, the following contributors to the report from which the graphic is taken, must HATE Asians:

Kathay Feng Esq.
Michael Gi-Hao Cheung
Ashlee Oh
Riku Matsuda
Marshall Wong

...obviously biased against Asians in some way. Is that what you want to go with?

Mon Jun 6, 2016, 04:32 PM
Jun 2016

What poll was posted here?

That is a report of LA County crime DATA. It is not a poll.

I'm sorry you feel that Asians aren't beat up frequently enough to appear in a chart of hate crimes in LA county by "Most Frequent Victims".

If you look at page 11 of the LA County Report, you will find that Asians are 1% of victims of reported hate crimes, while Whites - yes Whites - at 3%.

Get out and get beat up more in LA County, and the numbers will change more, but to be upset that Asians aren't beat up enough in LA County is simply bizarre.

WTF is with talking about "polls"?

You refuse to believe the data collected by the LA Human Rights Commission on hate crimes, which was posted here in response to someone else's comments about a "trend".

You have no other data to offer which contradicts the data posted. Feelings are not data, and reality is not an opinion.

Mon Jun 6, 2016, 05:06 PM
Jun 2016

We have a story about a woman who has a half-decade long arrest record of violent crime. She is a deranged sociopath, and apparently a raging racist.

There is nothing "just fine" about that.

However, to extrapolate from that crazy woman who has beat up a lot of people for a lot of things to some kind of "trend", or to believe that Donald Trump is the root cause of hate crimes - as if they never existed before his candidacy - are both incorrect statements which are not supported by the data.

The personalization of all hate crime as originating with Donald Trump in some way, ignores a much more longstanding and disturbing reality.

It affords people the convenience of believing that all that need be done about hate crimes is to ensure that Donald Trump is not elected.

I'm sorry, I don't believe that hate crimes began with Donald Trump. I think this country has a much longer history of racial hatred. I'm sorry that doesn't fit the "politics of the moment" approach to a longstanding problem in this country.

I don't think racism in this country started with Donald Trump, and I sure as hell don't believe it is going to end with him either.

You know, I got quite a few opinions about Japan from the Chinese folks I met in Beijing, and from a variety of Koreans in Seoul. I have never in my life seen people more pre-disposed to hate Japanese people as I encountered in Beijing and Seoul. My tour guide at the Great Wall even said, "I wish we could put up one to keep out the Japanese" as if that was some kind of acceptable comment to make. You want to find people who hate the Japanese? Try China.

Witnesses say the couple got off the light rail at the next stop. They say Rutledge followed them and punched the female victim in the face, fracturing her eye socket. The male victim stepped in front of the victim and was also punched in the face. Rutledge then left the area but was soon found by police and arrested.

Several disorderly conducts and failure to appear.

This girl has some big problems that go beyond Trump's racist encouragement.

Some people feel uneasy about some of the changes and they easily mix it into the other changes they see and want someone to blame it on.

When people want to go back to how things were before, they are usually misremembering it and longing for an imaginary scenario that just never existed.

I just think given this woman's record of behavior, I wouldn't be surprised to see she had a form of paranoid delusion.

Randomly yelling "I don't speak Chinese, stfu" is odd to me. "I don't speak Chinese", not "Don't speak that <insert racist remark> language around me".

I wouldn't be surprised if she was experiencing some paranoid delusion where she thought they were speaking about her.

Edit: Oh and after re-reading the article, it does mention she has a history of mental illness at the bottom.

Fortune cookies were the invention of a Japanese American, but they didn't go over well until many Chinese Americans used them at their Chinatown (Zhonggou cheng) Restaurants. Then, they became popular in the US. Most people in the states, only think about them with Chinese food here, so...they think it must be a cultural thing. Its not. Its simply something that caught on here.

Kinda like General Tso's Chicken. Invented by a Taiwanese chef who came to NEW YORK and sold his idea to Restaurants here. You can't find General Tso's chicken in ASIA!!
