Most new young voters in Japan find party policies hard to grasp: poll
TOKYO
Nearly 90% of people aged 18 and 19 polled by Kyodo News online find that political parties have not explained their policies in an easy-to-understand manner ahead of the July 10 upper house election, a survey showed Tuesday.
The poll was conducted to gauge sentiment among the teens as they will have a chance to vote for the first time in the upcoming House of Councillors election after a law was changed last year to lower the nations voting age from 20 to 18.
Among the 1,550 youths who responded to the Internet survey between Thursday and Monday, 88% held an unfavorable view of political parties efforts to make policies comprehensible, far surpassing 12% who were satisfied with the information they received.
The poll found 75% of respondents have not yet decided which party to vote for, while 25% said they have either already decided or more or less decided which way they will vote.
The results underscore difficulties facing political parties, despite their efforts to engage young voters, such as by distributing youth-focused brochures.
