Changes vowed for parade after Confederate flag display (NY)

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mayor Joanne Yepsen’s office plans to develop written guidelines for future city parades after a Confederate flag was displayed by a motorcyclist at last month’s Memorial Day parade, provoking outrage from some who saw it.

The May 26 parade was organized by the mayor’s office through an informal process, and city officials said they had no advance knowledge of the motorcyclist carrying the Confederate banner, who was at the end of a procession of motorcyclists representing veterans.

“This is an incident none of us knew about or planned for, and we never want it to happen again,” Yepsen told a group of concerned residents who met with her at City Hall on Tuesday.
