Japanese Plutonium Arrives in US

Two British ships loaded with plutonium and highly enriched uranium from the Japan Atomic Energy Agency’s Fast Critical Assembly reactor arrived Tuesday at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina.

The two ships, which are usually used to transport spent nuclear fuel between Japan and Europe for reprocessing, departed the village of Tokai, Ibaraki Prefecture with 331 kilograms (730 pounds) of plutonium in March, and were originally expected to reach their destination last month.

transported 331 kilograms (730 pounds) of plutonium to the US. The shipment comes amid growing concerns over Japan’s vast stockpile of plutonium.

The amount of plutonium transported has been used by Japan for research purposes and is enough to make over 50 nuclear bombs.

The Pacific Egret and Pacific Heron, the two cargo ships operated by Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd. and owned by the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), have arrived to the Savannah River Site, a US government facility in South Carolina.

Nihongo is the Language of Japan.

"Sono Tōkyō shinbun wa dono kuraidesu ka?" How much is that Tokyo Newspaper?
"106.58 Yen"
"Watashi wa kore o torudarou, arigatōgozaimashita." I will take this, thank you.

My cat looked exactly like an oatmeal newspaper, ergo the name.

I will memorize this:
"Watashi wa kore o torudarou, arigatōgozaimashita."

thank you, that's fun to say

If we ever were to get serious about climate change - we won't, but let's pretend we did - we would need to get our hands on as much plutonium as is possible. The world supply of plutonium is only equivalent to a few year's worth of planetary demand for energy, and while it is possible to utilize it to make more plutonium, there is a physical constraint on doubling time in breeder reactors.

...that afterwards, Japan became a nation that's highly industrialized, and has the means to build nuclear weapons whenever they want, and chooses not to.
