Talk grows of replacing Trump at GOP convention

https://www.yahoo.com/news/talk-grows-replacing-trump-convention-000000790.html?nhp=1

There is growing talk on the right of replacing Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee for president, and even chatter about a possible alternative.

As Trump has floundered over the past week after questioning a federal judge’s impartiality because of his Mexican ancestry, Trump’s critics within the GOP have stepped up their efforts to thwart him. Some anti-Trump conservatives, who have tried for months to recruit an independent candidate, have begun looking more closely at attempting to persuade delegates at next month’s GOP convention to nominate someone other than Trump.

“There is a rapidly moving train toward the convention to try to obstruct it at the convention. Trump in the last 72 hours has given hope to people who think it’s now possible,” said Erick Erickson, a conservative radio talk show host and one of Trump’s most resolute critics.

Amid this agitation for a Trump alternative, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s name has been increasingly mentioned as a possible replacement. Walker was an early frontrunner in the GOP primary, but he suspended his campaign last summer in the face of sagging fundraising and poll numbers.

Their party would fracture, divide, and not recover. The Teahadists will never support a mainstream candidate if Trump is replaced. The general demeanor of Republicans is to follow the leader. Without a clearly defined leader, they will splinter away helplessly before a Democrat blow out.

at least as far as the presidency is concerned. He won a primary election, the GOP voters will not appreciate seeing their votes tossed out at the convention. If they do get rid of Trump they'll be doing it to save their party, not elect a president.

A nightmare for Hillary? Not necessarily. If the Tea-publicans give the Republican Party's presidential nomination to someone else, I very much doubt that most of the people who voted and campaigned for him would meekly return to the Republican fold to vote for the guy the GOP's powers-that-be selected.

More likely Trump voters would be infuriated, both at the party establishment that took away their candidate and negated their vote, and also at the Republicans' replacement candidate.
I suspect that their reaction would be something like what Bernie's fans are showing on the Democratic side right now--multiplied by a factor of at least ten.

I dare say that even "the wicked witch lady" caricature 🙄 that right-wing radio presents of the former First Lady would seem a better alternative in their eyes.

It would be a media circus, the narrative that the GOP can't handle their stuff would dominate, and there would be millions of pissed off Trump fans waiting in the wings to burn the world down.

The GOP pooh-bahs may not like Trump as their nominee, but they'd get run out of town by their whackadoo base if they dropped into the Convention and said, in effect, "Thanks for voting in the primaries, everyone, but you chose wrong. We'll fix it for you."

A long way of saying that Erick Erickson isn't going to start being right anytime soon.

It is incredibly unlikely Republicans dump Trump at the convention, he would need to do something even more extreme than he has by several orders of magnitude.
