13 dead, at least 41 hurt in Father's Day weekend shootings

Thirteen people were shot to death and at least 41 others, including a 3-year-old boy, have been wounded in separate shootings across the city during the weekend between 5 p.m. Friday and early Monday morning.

So far this year, about 1,780 people have been shot across the city, according to records kept by the Chicago Tribune.

The deadliest night was Friday into Saturday when five people were fatally shot and nine others were hurt. Four of the fatalities occurred in the span of seven hours.

The fatalities included a 16-year-old boy who was killed in West Englewood at 9:06 p.m. Friday. He was in the front passenger seat of a car driving through an alley in the 6500 block of South Hamilton Avenue when two males came up and fired shots, according to police.

Doesn't Chicago have a near complete gun ban? JonathanRackham Jun 2016 #5
Meaningless, if the surrounding areas don't also impose such a ban. Orrex Jun 2016 #7
They tried to but the supreme court wouldn't allow it. BTW if you know Chicago geography mucifer Jun 2016 #10

But what religion were the shooters? And what were the races / sexual orientations of the victims?

It isn't news if it isn't sensational.

The real problem is murder committed by GUNS isn't on most folks' radar.

Prompting the question of how many of the 54 shootings there were perpetrated by the rifles, no bubbles hurt here.

Quoted from the article:

One of the fatalities Sunday was a 17-year-old boy shot with “possibly an AK-47’’ assault rifle in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, according to police.

The 17-year-old boy was walking east in the 1700 block of West 46th Street around 1:30 p.m. when a light-colored, four-door Saturn pulled up and fired shots with a "high-powered semi-automatic weapon," striking the victim as he attempted to run, said Eugene Roy, chief of detectives for the Chicago police.

Police are investigating whether the rifle has been used in any other shootings.

Then teen was pronounced dead on the scene, and the shooting was believed to be gang related, Roy said.

And we all know that even a trivial error in describing a gun is a much greater tragedy than thousands of murder victims.

Because nothing matters more than our sacred guns.

Nothing.

The south side boarders Indiana which is the exact opposite as far as gun laws. So many people drive a few miles over the state boarder and get their guns, come back to Chicago and kill people. It seems that new federal laws would be helpful.

violence in the city.

Hopefully they will figure out a way how to make better use of it. Maybe via precedent set by the Terror watch list?

"In a city of 2.7 million people, about 1,400 are responsible for much of the violence, Mr. Johnson said, and all of them are on what the department calls its Strategic Subject List.
...
“We are targeting the correct individuals,” Mr. Johnson said. “We just need our judicial partners and our state legislators to hold these people accountable.”
