Texas secessionists inspired by Brexit: ‘If Trump fails #Texit seems to be our best remedy’

Thousands of social media users are jumping on board with a Brexit-style secession for Texas — which Twitter users are calling “Texit.”

The Texas Nationalist Movement has been trying to piggyback on Britain’s vote for leaving the European Union for several weeks, arguing the two movements are basically the same, reported Vocativ. “The vast majority of the laws, rules and regulations that affect the people of Texas are created by the political class or unelected bureaucrats in Washington,” said Daniel Miller, president of the TNM.

The Texas secession movement is nothing new, of course, but the “Texit” catchphrase exploded in use Friday, after Britain narrowly voted to break away from the EU.

Vocativ found more than 5,800 people tweeted the phrase — a five-fold increase from the day before — and 1,745 people tweeted about it between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. London time, when the results were announced.

The EU was never a single country; it's an organization based mainly on trade agreements. A state seceding from the US is not in any respect the same or even a similar thing, but they are welcome to try. It didn't end well the last time.

Support for secession within the state is rarely higher than 20-25%. The Facebook pages of some of the newspapers are pretty amusing every time it comes up.

You can get 20% of people to agree on almost anything.

We have a population here of about 27.5 million. If 20% are for secession and the US government helps the rest to leave Texas (especially the poor, elderly, and/or disabled) are y'all truly prepared for 22,000,000 people to filter their way (with their movable property) into the rest of the US? That's 22 million Texans. We know how much y'all already hate us. Are you sure you want us to be living next door?

And if letting any of us "out" is off the table, well then, how Liberal of you.

- "Here's my driver's license."
- "Sorry, I need to see a proper passport for international travel. And I need to search your baggage, take your fingerprints and make a biometric scan of your face. Do you have a visa for staying in the US?"
- "What? This is outrageous!"
- "So you're an illegal immigrant, eh?"
- "Illegal? How dare you?"
- "What's this? A gun? Sorry, you need a special permit to bring that into the US."
- "You are violating my 2nd Amendment rights!!!"
- "No, I'm not. Only US-citizens have 2nd Amendment rights. You are an illegal alien with a gun, trying to sneak across the border."
- "You are violating my liberties!!!"
- "What's this? Cash money? Why would you have cash money and gold-coins with you? Is that for some kind of drug-deal? We're gonna have to impound the money under civil forfeiture. Don't worry: You can get it back if you sue us in court."

Texas' contributions are 1/3 of New York and 1/5 of California's contributions. Texas is also less dramatically out-contributed by Massachusetts and Florida, in spite of those states' smaller populations.

For comparison: https://www.opensecrets.org/parties/geog.php?cycle=2016&cmte=RPC Texas is the #2 contributor to the Republicans, and donates 3x as much to the Republicans as to the Democrats.

Let them find out how life would be as a foreign country with no federal assistance or subsidies whatsoever. The reddest states on that map already receive disproportionately large shares of federal dollars for a variety of social programs that maintain the social safety net, so say bye-bye to your participation in SS, Medicare, Obamacare and no more food stamps, or first responder training and financial support.

Go forth fools, and develop your own monetary system, your own franking system, and don't expect the feds to hand out emergency aid for hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, or your next ebola outbreak. No more fed money to maintain the interstate highways, seaports or airports (and train your own air traffic controllers), and your military bases -- gone. Yep, it all goes away. Lets see how the Lone Star state’s bottom line fairs after their secession.

Texas has lots of good progressive people. It's not their fault they're surrounded by idiots. But if Texas left the Union, the Republican Party would never win a national election again. It would be like the Democratic Party losing California.

Texas progressives are outnumbered by conservative idiots. I used to live in Texas, but I left 17 years ago after living in the South for 19 years--to the date!
Another major problem is that ethnic minorities, particularly blacks and Latinos, AFAIK, are systematically disenfranchised, so I guess progressives are living in enemy-occupied, enemy-controlled territory.

I would greatly fear for the racial, political and religious minorities in Texas without the protections of the federal government. I'd also fear for the poor and underprivileged on all background as outside of some enlightened towns (Austin etc) the investment in education and other anti poverty measures by the state is less than robust.

And of course, the half of the citizenry made up of women would see rights rolled back at an even more alarming pace.

It's fun to say "Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out!" But people would indeed suffer.

And finally, I'm sticking by my prediction that Texas goes blue by 2024. It's changing demographically and politically, and it's only a matter of time before the diverse and more liberal traditions (yes they are there!) are strong enough to assert them self at a state and national level.

One upon a time, California was reliably GOP too.

Plus every American citizen that resides in Texas on the exit day lose their American citizenship. The elderly and disabled will lose Social security, SSI and Medicare.

The chance that Texas residents will vote to approve that is very small.

(I'd pack up and move the family if this happened.)

How the conversation with Uncle Sam might go:

You aren't going to close your military bases, are you? Well, yes.

You aren't going to close the borders and enact border checks, are you? Well, yes.

You aren't going to require visas for Texan patriots to visit the US, are you? Quite possibly.

You aren't going to end all of those transfer payments you make? Hell yes.

What about the Social Security owed to our residents? Interesting question, isn't it.

There aren't going to be tariffs between our nations, are there? Everything is negotiable.

My child just married an American. Will he be able to live in the US? That's complicated...

Stop talk about it.

Set the wheels in motion.

Close up the military bases. Remove vast federal bureaucracy located in Texas. Declare NASA facilities sovereign territory of the US.

No federal funds for social services, Medicaid, ObamaCare, education. Shut 'em down.

It would be interesting to see which, and how many, companies would choose to close up shop in the new Republic of Texas and relocate north.

I know it won't happen, but I can dream, can't I? And they can take huge swaths of the south with them.

Or maybe they should all STFU about it and get on with life in the reality-based universe.
