Michigan, if it were a Canadian province, would be more on par with Quebec economically.

One nice thing about being a Canadian province is you can actually run a deficit and issue bonds like a sovereign nation. There are definite pluses to confederation.

...and we would fall under the Canada Health Act and receive transfer payments for single-payor Medicare!

I would prefer for those individuals who want to leave to just go ahead and move elsewhere. Canada has a huge landmass but a population (36 million) just under that of California (39 million).

If we can get Oregon on board, we can erase the border between our two states, and proclaim the Republic of Cascadia.

And if the Cascadia secession included much of CA, I'd be all for it. But I sure wouldn't want my daughter down in the Bay area to be stuck being just "Left Coast" for the rest of her days.

The original Cascadia was also BC and northern California...nowadays, I think it should go all the way and just include the entire West coast.

except for the fact that they're all dormant volcanoes and part of the Pacific's Ring of Fire

And whenever California gets The Big One, not being part of the union with the rest of the states would not work out so well for getting aid.

Short of Lucifer's Hammer hitting right in the middle of Yosemite, talk of breaking up the states is rather fruitless. We're all in it together, for better or worse.

I do wonder if we're not pissing up a rope trying to drag all of the USA into the 21st century all at once sometimes. Not too many of our states would probably be able to hack it as sovereign nations, but there's a certain appeal to taking a heaping hunk of the power of the federal government and putting into the hands of a handful of regional governments instead...

Thanks largely to Atlanta and the souths busiest port now is in Savannah. Georgia has a low cost of living which means it doesn't pay it's work force what it should, but Georgia has lots of money.
