(65,290 posts)out of the party and into the Republican Party, as LBJ correctly predicted would happen when it passed. The kind of moderate Republican who voted for that bill are now Dems, and the former Dems who hated the idea of equal rights and integration now form a large chunk if the GOP's most rabid and devoted base.

(65,290 posts)a group of people drove them out. I said the passage of the bill drove them out. IOW, their bigotry was offended and in reaction to that feeling they left the party. They experienced those feelings of rage and outrage as forces driving them away from the party that they blamed for acting in a way that provoked those feelings. One's feelings and reactions to events typically drive one's behavior. Thus, the event (passage of the bill) provoked feelings that drove them to abandon the party responsible for the event they reacted stupidly and nastily to.

(45,411 posts)there were liberal, moderate, and conservative wings of both parties. See the dixiecrats in the south and some of the socially liberal Republicans in the upper midwest and northeast.
The first woman elected to the US congress was an anti-war Republican https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeannette_Rankin
The civil rights era was when liberals converged into the Dem party and the conservatives converged into the Repub party on many issues. We still have some conservative Democrats in some areas of Appalachia and the south. But I don't know of any liberal Republicans anymore.
Should have asked, "How many conservatives..."

(2,545 posts)would vote for Eisenhower or even Ronald Reagan. What we have today can't even be rightly called conservatism. It's a swill of hate, greed, fear and power lust stirred by an American version of Shiria law that motivate and define the new right wing. Part of what we are witnessing is the death throes of a virulent ideology whose raging at the dying of its light would destroy us all if it could take but one more heinous breath.

Remember Reagan running with a slogan of traditional American values? Republican code for keeping minorities in their place.
The underlying Republican message, starting with Goldwater's pitch for States Rights, Republican code for legalizing racial discrimination, has always been rooted in white supremacy. And now the Ku Klux Klan says its shares the same values as Donald Trump, a well documented bigot.
Of course the Repubic retort to all of this is Robert Byrd was in the Klan in 1948. They forget Byrd denounced the Klan shortly after being elected in 48.
I, for one, have heard enough of their shit. What about you?
The time has come for all normal Americans to confront Republican bigotry head on. Cut them off. Don't let them speak, filibuster all conversations with them. There is no such thing as a reasonable Republican.
