(Reuters) - A Greek far-right politician who slapped a left-wing politician in the face and threw water at another during a live television talk show sued his victims for defamation on Monday.
Ilias Kasidiaris, spokesman of the far-right Golden Dawn party, said he would also sue private TV station Antenna for wrongful detention after he was locked in a room in the studio following the attack until he broke down the door and escaped.
Kasidiaris shocked viewers last week with the attack on Rena Dourou, a deputy in the radical leftist SYRIZA party and Liana Kanelli, a veteran communist deputy, during a heated debate ahead of national elections on June 17.
The 31 year-old former army commando went into hiding after the assault but issued a statement at the weekend blaming the two middle-aged women for deliberately provoking him into the attack.

(10,751 posts)The age-old, sadly predictable mantra of the abuser.
BTW, how do you defame someone when it is their own actions that are broadcast, live, for all to see? How in hell is that defamatory? The man defamed himself!
Another observation. He is demonstrating the standard tactics of thugs, bullies, and conservatives everywhere: when attacked, go on the offensive. They always try to avoid the defensive stance, as their standard operating procedure is, "the best defense is a good offense". He really thinks this will work. I sincerely hope he is proven wrong.

He accuses them of 'collaborating' with someone - rioters, I think, and calls them communists. They say they won't deal with fascists. Dourou (the woman on the right) asks 'did you get postponement?' - a reference to his pending trial for conspiracy for violence (he's accused of driving some thugs to where they beat someone up). The woman on the left, Kanelli, says "you won't turn me into soap" (that's a bit provocative, IMO, but he doesn't seem to notice it). He replies to Dourou "yes, we got postponement. What's your problem? Because a damn bitch from your party has sued us?"
Dourou says "There is a crisis beyond the economy. We have a crisis of democracy". He talks over her with "Wait a minute. A personal matter was raised earlier. I don't permit ...", and she continues "a crisis of democracy because we have inside parliament these people, who will take this country 500 years back..." and then he throws the water at her. He shouts "you moron! How dare you accuse us that we will hold this country backwards!"

(24,692 posts)That is about as sad and sick as it gets.
The only good thing that can come of this is to strip the veneer of respectability from the neo-Nazi, anti-immigrant, anti-euro, anti-EU party which got 7% of the vote in the May election which would have given them seats in parliament for the first time.
