Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders says he'll try to block Senate consideration of a bill that would require nationwide labeling of food with genetically modified products, but with a less stringent labeling requirement than the one included in Vermont's law.
Individual senators can put a hold on legislation, blocking it from coming up for debate unless backers can muster 60 votes. The Vermont independent says he prepared to resort to that tactic.
Sanders' comments come just days before Vermont is slated to become the first state to require labeling of genetically modified food.
And they come days after the Republican chairman and ranking Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee announced compromise federal labeling legislation that Sanders says is too lenient on the food industry.

Sanders was a no-show for the Senate filibuster but briefly appeared for the "sit-in" led by Rep. John Lewis.

(38,958 posts)He still is a candidate for President, there is this whole convention thing that hasn't happened as of yet and that is when the candidate for the party is nominated by both parties. Senator Sanders has yet to withdraw or not be nominated by one of those conventions.

I could go dig up the exact language and post, but I shouldn't need to.
The substantive content of the OP is informative, relevant, and well worth discussing. The problem is in the headline comes across a bit snide, and it really isn't necessary or helpful to be that way. But I'm only pointing out that yes, Sanders is to be treated as part of the Dem coalition, per Skinner's posts, whether some folks here like that or not.

(4,229 posts)I'm way more concerned about accurate labeling of food and consumer choice than I am about the gun issue, it's a loser for democrats and homicides are way low.
