BANGOR, Maine — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday blamed Hillary Clinton for the growth of the Islamic State during a campaign event here in Bangor, citing the recent terrorist attack at a major airport in Istanbul.

“I've been watching her for so many years. She has been in that position for so long in one way or another. She hasn't done anything about what's going on. ISIS was formed during her tenure,” Trump said. “ISIS is now worse than ever. You see what happened yesterday, you see what's going on generally.”

Trump’s forceful rhetoric on combating terrorism — both at home and abroad — have been at the center of his presidential bid, even amid persistent questions about his grasp of foreign policy. Trump has often pointed to Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state under President Obama to call into question her judgment on foreign affairs, particularly with regard to foreign interventions in Iraq and Libya.

"They're taking our youth. You know why they're taking our youth? Because they look like they're winning. We have to give them a big, fat, ugly defeat,” Trump added.
