A disabled woman was beaten bloody by federal agents during an airport security screening while on her way to undergo treatment for a brain tumor. Hannah Cohen set off the metal detector at a security checkpoint at the Memphis International Airport, and she was led away for additional screening, reported WREG-TV.
They wanted to do further scanning, (but) she was reluctant she didnt understand what they were about to do, said her mother, Shirley Cohen.
Cohen said she tried to tell agents with the Transportation Security Administration that her 19-year-old daughter is partially deaf, blind in one eye, paralyzed and easily confused but she said police kept her away from the security agents.
The confused and terrified young woman tried to run away, her mother said, and agents violently took her to the ground.
Shes trying to get away from them, but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor, Cohen said. There was blood everywhere.

The sort of mindset exhibited by both the police and the TSA here is frightening at best. There needs to be more action taken to turn down institutionalized violence by "public servants" several notches.

Folks jump up and down, and say that the government's #1 job and priority is to keep us safe. Folks need to feel safe and they demand that the state protect them from all of their boogie men, real or perceived. This is the result. I sure feel safer.
There is a reason that the state should not be policed by the military. The military's #1 job is to defend the nation from its enemies, both foreign and domestic. The police's #1 job, should be as guardians of the people. When you militarize the police, then the people become the enemies of the state.

(212 posts)Due to back to back strokes a few years ago, I am partially deaf and legally blind. I also have balance issues and stumble a lot.
So in 2012, I was at the LA Airport. As we went through security, they wouldn't allow me to use my cane, so I was having some difficulty. As I was stepping through the metal detector, I stumbled and accidentally touched the wall. Well, that was a huge no-no. Two large men with shaved skulls (for that SS look) pulled me out of the machine, rather forcibly patted me down without a single word. A female officer attempted to examine my cane (a Hoover cane for the blind, I overheard her say they might be some kind of nunchucks), and she promptly broke it. When it was decerned I was disabled and not an extra smart terrorist, I was told I could go.
I went to the Accesibilty Services office at the Airport and was told they were really very sorry about my experience and if I wanted a couple of bucks to pay for the cane, I would have to sign a form absolving the TSA and the airport authority of any responsibility. When I asked the names of "officers" involved for possible individual action, I was told that, since they aren't actually LEOs, no names or ID numbers needed to be provided. As I left, it was suggested I have a t-shirt or large button made proclaiming my disability so TSA could handle "my situation" differently.
And yes, I had a button made, and I wear it whenever I need to deal with the airport thugs. So far, I haven't had a repeat of what happened. But I really hate that fucking button.
Stonepounder
(4,033 posts)Although it gives me a thought. We could require people to wear buttons proclaiming their religion and ethnic background so TSA could handle 'their situation' differently.
White Christians - go right through
White Muslims - a second look
Non-White, regardless of religion or ethnic origin - additional screening
Middle-Eastern Muslims - back room strip searches taking long enough that the miss their flight.
I'm sure they could break the classifications down to even finer gradations.

(1,196 posts)In Europe, someone who just runs onto a soccer pitch during a game is roughly tackled by security and no one complains about it. I saw a few instances of this just the past two weeks. Talk about being slammed to the ground. Coming right after the suicide bombing of the Turkish airport, I would think running from the TSA at the airport would be taken more seriously than running onto a soccer field. If she was actually beaten bloody like the headline states, then it is a different story.
Very unfortunate she sustained any injuries.

I do know that it is tragic she turned out to be disabled and was injured when tackled.
If her mother, the only person there that would know, had any inkling that her daughter might panic and flee the checkpoint, she should have handled that proactively with the TSA.

I'll let you into what appears to be a secret that has been kept from you : people can sense another person's helpless, innocent panic, and very easily distinguish it from the reaction of a guilty fugitive from the law ; and would particularly be able to do so, in the case of a had-nosed terrorist.

I hope they tackled her with the intent of stopping her and not with the intention of hurting her. Hopefully that will be investigated and any wrongdoing punished.

Disabled cancer patient sues airport and TSA after bloody checkpoint scuffle
Posted 9:36 am, July 1, 2016, by Tribune Media Wire
MEMPHIS, Tenn. ---Bloodied and bruised, Hannah Cohen was led from Memphis International Airport in handcuffs last year. The 19-year old was headed home to Chattanooga on June 30, 2015 after treatment for a brain tumor at St. Jude Hospital. It's a trip her family has made for 17 years.
This time, an unarmed Hannah set off the metal detector at a security checkpoint
They wanted to do further scanning, she was reluctant, she didn't understand what they were about to do," her mother Shirley Cohen said.
Cohen told us she tried to tell TSA agents her daughter is partially deaf, blind in one eye, paralyzed, and easily confused, but said she was kept at a distance by police. She's trying to get away from them but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. There was blood everywhere, said Cohen.

All Occupy wanted was the crooked bankers who looted the Treasury to return the funds they extorted from the tax payers, threatening world wide chaos if they weren't paid off.
