Disabled woman beaten bloody by TSA agents after becoming confused and afraid at security checkpoint

A disabled woman was beaten bloody by federal agents during an airport security screening while on her way to undergo treatment for a brain tumor. Hannah Cohen set off the metal detector at a security checkpoint at the Memphis International Airport, and she was led away for additional screening, reported WREG-TV.

“They wanted to do further scanning, (but) she was reluctant — she didn’t understand what they were about to do,” said her mother, Shirley Cohen.

Cohen said she tried to tell agents with the Transportation Security Administration that her 19-year-old daughter is partially deaf, blind in one eye, paralyzed and easily confused — but she said police kept her away from the security agents.

The confused and terrified young woman tried to run away, her mother said, and agents violently took her to the ground.

“She’s trying to get away from them, but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor,” Cohen said. “There was blood everywhere.”

The sort of mindset exhibited by both the police and the TSA here is frightening at best. There needs to be more action taken to turn down institutionalized violence by "public servants" several notches.

“She’s trying to get away from them, but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor,” Cohen said, recounting the moment TSA agents tackled her disabled daughter and threw the young woman to the ground. http://www.inquisitr.com/3264274/hannah-cohen-disabled-woman-badly-beaten-by-tsa-on-return-home-from-brain-tumor-treatment/#xS9IDyGjzLtwElzj.99

Listened to a ridiculous radio interview this morning wth a rw nutcase saying that cities can't recruit new officers, because they don't want to be hated on.

Maybe they should be 3× less likely to stun gun black males than white, than 3× more likely. ( Awkward sentence but you know what I mean.)

The TSA, police, and others involved will have an internal investigation into the event, where they will find that they did nothing wrong. There will be no comment due to the ongoing investigation, and when this event has faded from memory, there will be little to no follow up story.

Folks jump up and down, and say that the government's #1 job and priority is to keep us safe. Folks need to feel safe and they demand that the state protect them from all of their boogie men, real or perceived. This is the result. I sure feel safer.

There is a reason that the state should not be policed by the military. The military's #1 job is to defend the nation from its enemies, both foreign and domestic. The police's #1 job, should be as guardians of the people. When you militarize the police, then the people become the enemies of the state.

People with physical anomalies that show up on scanners, such as urine bags, end up being singled out and manhandled by people with no medical training.

The weakest and most vulnerable among us end up being targets, and this has been going on for years!

Fri Jul 1, 2016, 03:16 PM

Due to back to back strokes a few years ago, I am partially deaf and legally blind. I also have balance issues and stumble a lot.

So in 2012, I was at the LA Airport. As we went through security, they wouldn't allow me to use my cane, so I was having some difficulty. As I was stepping through the metal detector, I stumbled and accidentally touched the wall. Well, that was a huge no-no. Two large men with shaved skulls (for that SS look) pulled me out of the machine, rather forcibly patted me down without a single word. A female officer attempted to examine my cane (a Hoover cane for the blind, I overheard her say they might be some kind of nunchucks), and she promptly broke it. When it was decerned I was disabled and not an extra smart terrorist, I was told I could go.

I went to the Accesibilty Services office at the Airport and was told they were really very sorry about my experience and if I wanted a couple of bucks to pay for the cane, I would have to sign a form absolving the TSA and the airport authority of any responsibility. When I asked the names of "officers" involved for possible individual action, I was told that, since they aren't actually LEOs, no names or ID numbers needed to be provided. As I left, it was suggested I have a t-shirt or large button made proclaiming my disability so TSA could handle "my situation" differently.

And yes, I had a button made, and I wear it whenever I need to deal with the airport thugs. So far, I haven't had a repeat of what happened. But I really hate that fucking button.

Although it gives me a thought. We could require people to wear buttons proclaiming their religion and ethnic background so TSA could handle 'their situation' differently.

White Christians - go right through
White Muslims - a second look
Non-White, regardless of religion or ethnic origin - additional screening
Middle-Eastern Muslims - back room strip searches taking long enough that the miss their flight.

I'm sure they could break the classifications down to even finer gradations.

In Europe, someone who just runs onto a soccer pitch during a game is roughly tackled by security and no one complains about it. I saw a few instances of this just the past two weeks. Talk about being slammed to the ground. Coming right after the suicide bombing of the Turkish airport, I would think running from the TSA at the airport would be taken more seriously than running onto a soccer field. If she was actually beaten bloody like the headline states, then it is a different story.

Very unfortunate she sustained any injuries.

It's funny how a serious mishap like this becomes much more outrageous when the TSA's commander in chief is a black man.

It's curious that a much more accurate headline of "Disabled woman is injured when tackled while fleeing TSA officers at security checkpoint" becomes "Disabled woman beaten bloody by TSA agents after becoming confused and afraid at security checkpoint" when their CIC is a black man.

Someone needs to tell that poster that the chief of the TSA is Caucasian, and it doesn't fucking matter what color you are if you will body slam disabled people because you're on too big of a power trip to listen to a mere fucking taxpayer who pays your goddamned salary.

OK I got that out...

Nobody is talking about or even thinking about the CIC in this incident.

What the hell made you even think of bringing him into this? We've been complaining about abuses of the TSA since their inception, long before Obama was our President.

" I missed the part where her diabilities (sic) were obvious and known to the TSA..."

"Cohen said she tried to tell agents with the Transportation Security Administration that her 19-year-old daughter is partially deaf, blind in one eye, paralyzed and easily confused — but she said police kept her away from the security agents..."

On the other hand, your consistent rationalization of this quite bemusing... in a rather morbid and inadequate sort of way.

"Very unfortunate she sustained any injuries."
Given a fitting soundtrack (Hans Zimmer could pull it off) and three double Scotches, I'd give 3-10 odds on actual sincerity.

her person that she did not declare be allowed to run through an airport potentially endangering fellow passengers or should she have been tackled? I don't know.

I do know that it is tragic she turned out to be disabled and was injured when tackled.

If her mother, the only person there that would know, had any inkling that her daughter might panic and flee the checkpoint, she should have handled that proactively with the TSA.

The sensationalized headline is very misleading and only serves to incite. Beaten bloody indeed.

You don't KNOW???!!! Are you mad ? A metal thing in a bloody bra strap or some such oversight could trip such an alarm. Look at the woman's innocent, vulnerable face, for crying out loud !

I'll let you into what appears to be a secret that has been kept from you : people can sense another person's helpless, innocent panic, and very easily distinguish it from the reaction of a guilty fugitive from the law ; and would particularly be able to do so, in the case of a had-nosed terrorist.

I would expect some consideration for people in these situations - at least listen to the caregivers that are traveling with them.

And this happened in Memphis, the home of St. Jude's Hospital. People come from all over the world to go to St. Jude's, I would think anyone working at the airport would have an awareness that they would be seeing people with medical conditions coming through security.

They'd made this trip for seventeen years without a mishap. What on earth would make her mother think this time would be different? When something came up that made them want to pursue more scans, the mother did try to intervene to tell them she was disabled, but they wouldn't let her.

I think you are making a fool of yourself by persisting in this ridiculous attempt to blame this on the mother and the girl.

alarm and was pulled aside for more scanning and I decided to make a break for the terminal I would expect to be tackled. Given that, I can sort of see why they, not knowing the girl was disabled, may have tackled her. It was a tragic mistake that I hope those who were involved are regretting and are learning from. I hope they tackled her with the intent of stopping her and not with the intention of hurting her. Hopefully that will be investigated and any wrongdoing punished.

Please read Post #68.

I occasionally attend a support group for the blind, and EVERY single person has a story about thuggish, irresponsible TSA agents, ranging from being roughed up because we don't obey barked out orders quickly enough to having expensive equipment broken. They are shielded from consequences by a public more scared than smart. And in the end, our rights and comfort are sacrificed so you aren't afraid.

Just terrific.

She does not like crowds...seems she has a larger sense of personal space than others....you get her in a space like an airport and i go on full alert....and god help anyone who actually touches her....my heart goes out to this girl and her family

Disabled cancer patient sues airport and TSA after bloody checkpoint scuffle
Posted 9:36 am, July 1, 2016, by Tribune Media Wire

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ---Bloodied and bruised, Hannah Cohen was led from Memphis International Airport in handcuffs last year. The 19-year old was headed home to Chattanooga on June 30, 2015 after treatment for a brain tumor at St. Jude Hospital. It's a trip her family has made for 17 years.

This time, an unarmed Hannah set off the metal detector at a security checkpoint
“They wanted to do further scanning, she was reluctant, she didn't understand what they were about to do," her mother Shirley Cohen said.

Cohen told us she tried to tell TSA agents her daughter is partially deaf, blind in one eye, paralyzed, and easily confused, but said she was kept at a distance by police. “She's trying to get away from them but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. There was blood everywhere,” said Cohen.

because her mother was right there, but they restrained her so she couldn't talk to her daughter and the agents refused to listen to the mother. 10 seconds of shutting the fuck up and LISTENING would have stopped this before it happened.

Stupid assholes are just 100% knee jerk reactive. TSA needs to hire a few adults to supervise these idiots.

I hope Hannah wins millions and it hurts that agency enough to get a few incredibly stupid policies changed.

Apparently it is.

It has to be changed, somehow.

Someone courageous has to start stepping forward, all over the nation, or we're all lost. We're lost if we allow this to happen and not speak up.

People didn't realize that when Bush Sr amped up the Drug War waged on the American People that Clinton would take over and increase the incarceration rate even further. We all thought ok now we have a Democrat that can slow it down and address these crimes against humanity that were suddenly becoming normalized. Well, that did not happen and Bill broke all of Bush's records. The question is why? It's obvious...they worked together and served the same masters. Bill was about PR. He created a liberal "image" but continued republican policies. And the American people look like fools now.

He convinced 19 guys with box cutters to commit a dastardly crime. That crime caused us to cease living the American creed. It was a traditional American value to question authority. Not anymore. Just a nation brainwashed into being permanently frightened so as to sacrifice all the rights and privileges we were brought up to believe made this a great country, the land of the free and home of the brave. Remember Occupy and how peaceful protesters were violently attacked by the government for exercising their Constitutional rights to assemble and petition the government. All Occupy wanted was the crooked bankers who looted the Treasury to return the funds they extorted from the tax payers, threatening world wide chaos if they weren't paid off.
We've become so desensitized that a TSA thug beat up a disabled girl in front of witnesses and no one intervened on her behalf.
