KMGH-TV reports Michelle Kettleborough picked up her 7-year-old son from the Frontier District Day Camp and found him surrounded by people wearing Hooters visors.
But parents say it isn't the attire that irritates them - the women were wearing shorts and fitted T-shirts - but that Hooters doesn't fit the philosophy of the Scouts.
The Boy Scouts of America Denver Area Council says the restaurant chain, known for its scantily clad waitresses and sports-bar atmosphere, approached the organization about working with the scouts.
Hooters Colorado had posted photos of boys holding their craft projects and posing with employees but has since removed the images.

Oh the horror!!!!! I'm sure these kids were just traumatized seeing a few women with shorts and a fitted t-shirt!

(28,795 posts)and how much do you think the cub scouts LOVED those hooter girls?
I'd surely thought I'd died and gone to heaven if our pack had sponsors like those.
would have loved to seen the look on my den mother-mom's face had that happened.
My dad would've dug it, too. he kept playboys hidden under his stuff in one of his drawers
this multi-song youtube set, btw, is a great intro to zappa, for those who haven't checked him out, so let it play!

(6,342 posts)A business is trying to donate and help their local community. The women there were wearing tshirts and shorts. Kids see more skin at the beach or the pool.
What's the problem?

(21,506 posts)Good for hooter for trying to support the community.
I will likely never darken their door regardless but there is nothing wrong with them sponsoring a summer camp.

(364 posts)There is something wrong with an organization whose mission is to make money off women's boobs and objectification is sponsoring events for cub scouts where very young impressionable boys are there. I might be ok if there were no logos or advertising by Hooters, but clearly the goal is to spread their name among young boys to get brand recognition.

(63,221 posts)I have a problem with this too. I am sure they aren't sponsoring the Boy Scouts out of some greater humanitarian impulse.

(2,434 posts)I can definitely say I would be screaming bloody murder. An organization that exploits women would make me angry at the very least. This is not what scouting is supposed to be about. And yes, I also balked and complained about the NRA involvement. I was a den mother for many years and did my best to change the organization for its homophobia and xenophobia.

(16,245 posts)Fuck Hooters, that misogynistic piece of trash "restaurant."
For those who defend this shit, do you not see how fucking pervasive sexism is? This is part and parcel of what women deal with on a daily fucking basis, reduced to their body parts to sell burgers or floor wax or whatever.
And, yes, I know people work there voluntarily. People do all kinds of shitty things to make a living. It doesn't make it any less harmful to society.

(80,708 posts)The Boy Scouts have been teaching homophobia for decades - that's the "philosophy of the scouts" that is jeopardized by hooters- but people want to have a fit over skimpy shirts?
Sorry, not feeling the outrage. I don't believe in shaming people for their bodies, nor do I really believe sexuality is high up on the list of things "harmful to society".

(63,221 posts)Chances are they are there because their company wants to promote their brand to young boys early. Why do they not volunteer for Girl Scouts or other groups in need? I will think you will find that the motivation behind the brand "doing a good thing" is not quite so based in altruism.
Judging what they do for a living has nothing to do w/ prudery as you and so many other's who pride yourselves on your "broad minded" attitudes about sex think. I don't blame the women themselves. I blame a culture steeped in misogyny that promotes this type of business and sees women as nothing more than T&A. It completely devalues their humanity.
alarimer
(16,245 posts)Sexual harassment and abuse. Well, of course, those things are not exclusive to women, but the majority of people who experience those things are women. Any woman of almost any age has stories of unwelcome attention.
I get tired of the sneering "well, I'm sure those boys had a good time." Yeah, because it's never too early to start training in objectification. I get so pissed at men's (not all men, but most) sense of entitlement with regard to women's bodies. It's as if they only exist for their viewing pleasure. Which is amazing considering they would hate it if it happened to someone they loved. Why not teach your kids about treating everyone as a human being, not just a sum of their parts? When do we as a society start doing that, instead of giggling about boys and boobs?
I know that the parents objected because Hooters is "unwholesome" and not because they are great feminists. And I get that our society is all sort of messed up when it comes to sex and the human body.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)opposites of this issue. Some see the backlash as nothing but sexual prudery and they are speaking up for this in response to the religious right/sexually oppressed in this culture.
Others of us, like you and I see the harm this kind of objectification does to women and it's pervasiveness in society. It teaches men that women are nothing more than sexual objects and teaches them to discount or dismiss our humanity. This in turn I believe contributes to the fact of why it is so easy in this culture to get away with rape and violence toward women. We don't exist in our own right, we simply exist to please them and if we don't, we'll it's not like we are really human beings anyway so it's perfectly acceptable to many men to rape, abuse and discriminate against us.
There are so many here, mostly men I'm am afraid, who will never get what this does to women. They don't care and they don't want to understand. As long as they are getting off, they could give a shit about the larger picture. Of course these are usually the biggest cheerleaders when it comes to the rights of other oppressed groups, but somehow, women just don't seem to be quite as important to them when it comes to social justice.

(65,000 posts). . .one could use that term when they're at work with the tight tee shirts (yeah, i went there once on a business trip, but not a wings guy so didn't like the food.)
But, in those pictures, those tees are tight. They fit like any other tee shirt.
Much ado about nothing.
