I just remember that even one of the most partisan justices in recent memory - Tony Scalia - said enough was enough on investigations into Foster.

I was thinking about this in the way home.

I think it was David Brock in "Blinded by the Right" who recanted how he was dispatched to Arkansas to see what he could find. He returned with notepads of wild characters spinning fantastic conspiracies from the back rooms of bait and tackle stores. Everyone had crazed tales and thought they were going to cash in (remember the State Troopers?). The Clintons were like mythical Ozark creatures who hate goats whole, could stop rivers, and every death in the state was connected to them. All sides had crazies - remember the McDougals?

Brock returned to the Washington Times and his editors thought he had made the whole thing up. He had audio tapes and then took them to Arkansas. He'd been sent to find bits to patch together and found a ready made endless stream of material.

IN a way the Foster stories were Washingtonized versions of the Arkansas insanity.
