...and the day ends with Trump praising Saddam Hussein (again)

Donald Trump, speaking in North Carolina, just praised deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein as a killer of terrorists, noting that Hussein “didn’t read them the rights” before executing them.

“Saddam Hussein was a bad guy, right? He was a bad guy. Really bad guy,” Trump begins. “But you know what he did well? He killed terrorists. He did that so good. They didn’t read them the rights, they didn’t talk. They were a terrorists - it was over. Today, Iraq is Harvard for terrorism.”

Hussein was labelled a major sponsor of terrorism by the American government for decades, a status that was a major plank in the rationale to invade Iraq in 2003.

Rich guys who live in the palace can torture, kill and rule by terror and they are just doing what they have to do to keep their people safe from terrorists. (The fact that the secret police also keep the rich guy in power is, I am sure, completely coincidental.)

Donald Trump Praises Saddam Hussein for Being ‘Good’ at Killing Terrorists

Donald J. Trump praised Saddam Hussein at a campaign rally on Tuesday evening, saying that he had done a good job of killing terrorists. ... “But you know what he did well?” Mr. Trump said. “He killed terrorists. He did that so good. They didn’t read them the rights. They didn’t talk. They were terrorists. It was over.”

But Mr. Trump’s recollections of Mr. Hussein’s thwarting terrorism are not grounded in fact. While Mr. Hussein’s interests were not aligned with jihadists, whom Mr. Trump frequently rails against on the campaign trail, Iraq was listed as a state sponsor of terrorism by the State Department before the 2003 invasion.

After Mr. Trump’s rally, the Clinton campaign released a statement criticizing Mr. Trump, arguing that his “cavalier compliments for brutal dictators” show just how “dangerous” he would be in the Oval Office.

“Donald Trump’s praise for brutal strongmen seemingly knows no bounds,” Jake Sullivan, a senior policy adviser to Mrs. Clinton, said in the statement. “He has applauded the strength China showed in the Tiananmen Square massacre, offered admiration for Kim Jong-un’s murderous consolidation of power in North Korea, and consistently lavished praise on Vladimir Putin. Tonight, Trump yet again lauded Saddam Hussein as a great killer of terrorists, noting with approval that he never bothered to read anyone their rights.”

Trump says he would keep us safe from 'terrorism'. I wonder how (given his role models) he plans to do that. Will he be the 'rich guy in the palace' protecting us?

is the notion that Trump is a smokescreen candidate planted by the Clintons to provide cover for her when her media coverage turns unfavorable.

Far-fetched though it seems, Trump has a terrific record of making boneheaded, headline-grabbing statements at exactly the right moment to distract the media from Clinton for a few hours.

It's happened a bunch of times, and now we see Trump praising Hussein exactly when the GOP would love to focus the media's attention on their outrage over the FBI's failure to obey.

One wonders what comes next!
