I've never seen this question asked before.
My nephew is a cop. My husband's best friend is one also. The are both wonderful, compassionate men who truly care about the cities they protect and take their jobs very seriously.
They have either retired or passed away, but I come from a family of several police officers. Also several friends who were state police officers.

sociopath. Retired. Nice when it suits him. Horribly manipulative. Was not above lying in court to put someone away only based on whether the person comes from a "good family" or not.

(17,600 posts)I'm not close with any of the actual LEOs but there is respect for law enforcement on that side of the family and I do hear things from their perspective at times.
I do think there are many bad cops and some entire units are probably awful. But there are also a lot of cops who are really trying to do the job they're supposed to - "protect and serve". It's pretty frustrating for the cops who are trying to do it right, to feel helpless about the bad cops that give them all a bad reputation.

(82,383 posts)The one in my family is turning out to be a bitter racist who is teaching his sons to hate anyone who ever questions any cop any where. He is white of course. Believes that he had a hard time getting into the force because of affirmative actions - many black and female people got hired when he should have. He claims that people who interviewed him told him how great he was but why he could not be hired (which I don't find credible since who would say a thing like that on the job - it could get out and they'd get fired).
His sons are putting up every meme about poor white cops being persecuted and killed because they are white and how mean everyone is to question any cop killing a person, that must have been self defense. Too bad he's such a good father because his sons follow in his ignorant footsteps. Hopefully they will mellow out.

My daughter wrote this:
I will never EVER be okay with ANY unnecessary killings of ANYBODY, no matter what color, shape, or profession. Hear me when I say I acknowledge the pain, anger, and potential desire for revenge in this situation. But that feeling of revenge MUST be channeled differently. I have so much sadness and empathy for people of any color, religion, etc who have lived a life where racism against them is their norm. But, HAVING A LIFETIME OF PAIN DOESN'T JUSTIFY MURDERING THE INNOCENT AS AN OUTLET. Feel pain, feel anger, get to a point where you feel the only way to be heard is to pull that trigger, and then do this...DON'T PULL THE TRIGGER. Instead, embrace a desire for POSITIVE change for ALL of us.

I will still bash the bad cops no matter what.... I know a LOT of good cops, but have had run-ins with my share of bad ones too, just for driving/riding while long-haired & tattooed...
Cut the salaries of the inept Conngress Critters and gives raises to our troops, teachers, cops & firefighters!
