Cornel West wasnt particularly impressed by President Obamas comments on the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, especially contrasted with what the president said about Dallas.
West spoke to The Washington Post yesterdayfrom the DNCs platform meeting in Orlandosaid that he took particular notice of how easily Obama was able to denounce Dallas as vicious and despicable compared to Sterling and Castiles deaths.
He said, I thought it was weak. Hes always got to explain to white America how black people are feeling. Black people dont feel as if were being treated unequally its a fact that were being treated unequally. West has been consistently critical of President Obama concerning his public statements on racial inequality and injustice. And he still firmly believes that:
He has, he has, its just a fact, West said. Hes been running from the issue for too long. When he finally gets pushed into a corner, he says something eloquent and articulate. But youve got to be able to hit it head on.

(58,785 posts)wave his hands vigorously enough either. "...pushed into a corner." If he hadn't marginalized himself, he wouldn't need to sink to this kind of thing to get attention.

(128,894 posts)rather than whining. I.e., per his comments after the Eric Garner case (and failure of the Grand Jury to indict in 2014) -

So as an example of "action", the Justice Department ended up essentially forcing reform on the Ferguson PD (different but related well-known case) that was announced just a few months ago.
Often doing things like this (releasing embarrassing reports and suing the offending departments) is enough to trigger other municipalities to start reforms on their own without coercion. Many will not, but any that do is definitely a step in the right direction.
Cornel is well past his relevancy date.
