In General - How Do Police Depts Feel About People & Guns?....

Have PD's weighed in on open carry? Have PD's weighed in on concealed carry? Have PD's weighed in on assault weapons? Have PD's weighed in on large capacity ammo magazines?

Watching how the Dallas Police were outgunned against this guy with the assault weapon - one would think that they would be anti such weapons.

Why aren't the police depts(PD's) across this country more vocal about gun control?

If I were a cop I certainly would not like to be kind of a sitting duck to perhaps mentally screwed up bad actors with guns.

Why don't we hear more from PD's regarding these issues.

I would think that PD's being vocal on these issues would go a long way to sway Congress.

Please weigh in on my post here. Help me understand.

Who cares what militaristic authoritarian organizations care about what civil rights I may or may not exercise. How about we get them to respect the ones we have first.

PoliceOne's Gun Control Survey: 11 key lessons from officers' perspectives

Never before has such a comprehensive survey of law enforcement officers’ opinions on gun control, gun violence, and gun rights been conducted

Apr 8, 2013

Gun Survey 2013

In March, PoliceOne conducted the most comprehensive survey ever of American law enforcement officers’ opinions on the topic gripping the nation's attention in recent weeks: gun control.

More than 15,000 verified law enforcement professionals took part in the survey, which aimed to bring together the thoughts and opinions of the only professional group devoted to limiting and defeating gun violence as part of their sworn responsibility

PoliceOne's 2013 Gun Policy & Law Enforcement Survey Results: Executive Summary

Totaling just shy of 30 questions, the survey allowed officers across the United States to share their perspectives on issues spanning from gun control and gun violence to gun rights.

Top Line Takeaways
Breaking down the results, it's important to note that 70 percent of respondents are field-level law enforcers — those who are face-to-face in the fight against violent crime on a daily basis — not office-bound, non-sworn administrators or perpetually-campaigning elected officials.

1.) Virtually all respondents (95 percent) say that a federal ban on manufacture and sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds would not reduce violent crime.

2.) The majority of respondents — 71 percent — say a federal ban on the manufacture and sale of some semi-automatics would have no effect on reducing violent crime. However, more than 20 percent say any ban would actually have a negative effect on reducing violent crime. Just over 7 percent took the opposite stance, saying they believe a ban would have a moderate to significant effect.

3.) About 85 percent of officers say the passage of the White House’s currently proposed legislation would have a zero or negative effect on their safety, with just over 10 percent saying it would have a moderate or significantly positive effect.

4.) Seventy percent of respondents say they have a favorable or very favorable opinion of some law enforcement leaders’ public statements that they would not enforce more restrictive gun laws in their jurisdictions. Similarly, more than 61 percent said they would refuse to enforce such laws if they themselves were Chief or Sheriff.

5.) More than 28 percent of officers say having more permissive concealed carry policies for civilians would help most in preventing large scale shootings in public, followed by more aggressive institutionalization for mentally ill persons (about 19 percent) and more armed guards/paid security personnel (about 15 percent).

likely gun enthusiasts and/or aficionados...not all for sure - but many - especially in rural areas.

On edit: "Rather, it was a self-selected Internet poll, in which more than 15,000 of PoliceOne.com’s 400,000 registered members chose to respond, either because of email solicitation or a link to the survey on the PoliceOne.com website"

Not sure what that means, but point taken.

that any survey they produced means much of anything.

That sure is an enormous sample but it was self-selected -- not a random, scientifically selected sample -- so it doesn't show much of anything about the opinions of police officers in general.

8. NY Sheriffs response to Safe Act

http://www.nysheriffs.org/articles/sheriffs%E2%80%99-response-ny-safe-act

"...
•Assault weapon ban and definition of assault weapons.

We believe that the new definition of assault weapons is too broad, and prevents the possession of many weapons that are legitimately used for hunting, target shooting and self defense. Classifying firearms as assault weapons because of one arbitrary feature effectively deprives people the right to possess firearms which have never before been designated as assault weapons. We are convinced that only law abiding gun owners will be affected by these new provisions, while criminals will still have and use whatever weapons they want.

• Reduction of ammunition magazine capacity. The new law enacts reductions in the maximum capacity of gun magazines. We believe based on our years of law enforcement experience that this will not reduce gun violence. The new law will unfairly limit the ability of law‐abiding citizens to purchase firearms in New York. It bears repeating that it is our belief that the reduction of magazine capacity will not make New Yorkers or our communities safer.

• Sheriffs understand their Constitutional obligations and the concerns of constituents Sheriffs and other law enforcement officers are not called upon by this new legislation to go door‐to‐door to confiscate any weapons newly classified as assault weapons, and will not do so.

Sheriffs represent all the people, and we take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of New York. Sheriffs will continue to enforce all laws of the state and will protect the rights of all citizens, including those rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of New York.

NY sheriffs: We won't enforce gun laws, magazine limits

The law bans sales of some popular semi-automatic rifles and gives owners a year to register those they already owned

Sep 7, 2013

By Mark Boshnack
The Daily Star

NEW YORK — Don't expect any change in local enforcement of New York's SAFE Act following recent comments by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. That was the response from two local sheriff's departments and a state legislator Friday when asked to comment on what Cuomo had to say.

Cuomo's office drafted and pushed through the gun law in January, which, among other provisions, bans New York sales of some popular semi-automatic rifles and gives owners a year to register those they already owned. It also limited magazine capacity in most cases to seven bullets.

...
The New York State Sheriffs Association and five individual sheriffs have joined a court effort to block enforcement of new bullet limits for magazines and firearms restrictions.

Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond said he has no intention of enforcing the law, and that his office won't do anything that would cause law-abiding citizens to turn in their weapons or arrest them for possessing firearms.

"I'm not going back on my personal conviction," he said. Residents have told him this is what they want, he said, and "I've stood up for them, and I will continue to do so."

Gun owners in his county have a tradition of being hunters and outdoorsmen possessing all types of weapons, Desmond said.

I am good friends with (as in come over to my house and have steak tonight), and know many members of the Virginia State Police, and several sheriff's depts in the states of Virginia, and North Carolina..

I can assure you they won't "change their mind" because of this. Talk of silly, unenforceable gun bans, and silly controls, only serve to make them mad.

Just like the shooter in Dallas, feller had a CLEAN record, and according to all the reports I have seen, used a rifle that would be almost completely unaffected by any of the more recent "control" proposals.

One thing to keep in mind is there is no such thing as a "bullet proof vest". It is a horribly inaccurate term. Body Armor is a better term to use. A rifle round, any rifle round will punch through body armor designed to defeat handgun rounds like a knife through butter. Body armor works by dispersing the kinetic energy of the projectile and with rifle rounds you are talking about at least a magnitude more energy.

It is similar to how an airbag can help you survive a car accident at moderate speeds but if you crash into a brick wall at 200 mph no airbag is going to do anything.
