Why Black Lives Don’t Matter To The NRA

While the NRA loves to highlight these stories about using guns to punish criminals, they are exceedingly rare. Less than one percent of homicides in the U.S. occur during a home invasion and the rate of burglary in the U.S. has been steadily declining. Meanwhile, the reality of gun ownership in black communities, especially in cities, is much different.

While 61 percent of white Americans think gun rights are more important than gun control, 60 percent of African Americans hold the exact opposite position. Black parents are nearly twice as likely as white parents to say they worry about their child getting shot. Black parents worry more about shootings than about drug or alcohol use or depression. And 82 percent of African Americans say they “frequently worry about interactions between the police and young men of color.”

The fear isn’t unfounded. Four in ten African Americans have been personally impacted by gun-related violence. More than half of black millennials have said that they know a victim of police violence.

In black neighborhoods, like in all other parts of the country, more guns mean more violence. It’s been proven time and time again.

4. The Second Amendment was never meant for black people

After Martin Luther King Jr.’s home was firebombed in 1956, he applied for a concealed carry permit for his self-defense in the state of Alabama. In those days, local police had the right to determine who could and couldn’t get a license. King’s application was denied, despite the fact that his life was threatened routinely, and that he wound up getting assassinated.

Fear of blackness was the pretext behind then-California Governor Ronald Reagan’s decision in 1967 to sign a law that made it illegal to openly carry firearms in the state. Just before the law’s passage, a group of Black Panthers openly carried their guns into the state Capitol Building, in an act that terrified mainstream white America. The law had the full backing of the NRA

Nearly 50 years later, black people still aren’t protected by gun laws that shield white Americans.

After Philando Castile’s death, his mother, Valerie Castile, told CNN that Philando and his sister, who also had a concealed carry permit, had talked about whether the laws permitting them to carry weapons would protect them.

“My daughter said, ‘You know what, I don’t even want to carry my gun because I’m afraid they’ll shoot me first and ask questions later,’” she said.

Sadly, her fears were proven justified.

It's time to end the conspiracy of silence.

White murder rate

84%

Most homicides were intraracial, with 84% of white victims killed by whites, and 93% of black victims killed by blacks.

But if 93% of black victims are killed by blacks, it means 7% are killed by non-blacks. That means whites and Latinos. Asians contribute a small portion.

If 84% of whites are killed by whites, it means 16% of those dead whites are killed by non-whites. That means blacks and Latinos. The role of Asians can also be discounted here.

The murder rate, though, doesn't include "Latino" as a major reporting category. Latinos are white or black for this purpose.

Did you really mean to point out that there's a disproportionate number of whites killed by blacks than blacks killed by whites?

12. If you want to get away from percentages...

and get into numbers relative to victims, race, populations, you will find gun violence disproportionately impacts people of color in every category!

This BS about black on black gun deaths as so much more to fear than violence from the people we entrust to "protect and serve" us and the system that supports immeasurable disproportionate violence against people of color - a reality that cannot be sanely denied - how is this just a game to fellow Democrats?

The better question might be, what kind of "Democrats" play this game?

11. Life doesn't matter to the NRA. Gun ownership is all that matters to the NRA.

Designed use of the gun doesn't matter. Specific purpose of the ammo design doesn't matter. Stockpile of neither matter. Private exchanges don't matter. How trained the owner is and their personal safety procedures don't matter. Nothing matters but guns, guns, and more guns.

13. Imagine the amount of gun control that would be passed

If the majority of gun owners where people of color and the majority of shooting victims were whites. If fact, some of the earliest forms of gun control in the US were aimed at disarming people of color, not at saving lives. Now the attitude is, if they can't disarm all people of color, it'd be best not to pass any more gun control, so white folks can make sure they're well protected against 'thugs' and 'terrorists.'
