Justice Ginsburg's Mistake
The U.S. Supreme Court justice imperiled the high courts neutrality by weighing in on the 2016 presidential election.

Donald Trump Is Right About Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

I have one thing to say to these folks: Bush V. Gore. Now fuck off.

(15,438 posts)will be taken apart, dissected, focused on, then spun and regurgitated with a new and pro-GOP meaning throughout the country. We have to come to terms with the fact that our Fourth Estate is dead, and incorporated propaganda outlets have taken over. Once we understand that as a given fact, we'll be so much more selective in what we choose to believe, and it will benefit us overall in the long run.

(2,493 posts)Are perhaps the most powerful individuals in the country, other than the president. When a justice makes the types of statements that Ginsburg made it calls into question the court's impartiality. As much as I dislike Trump, Ginsburg's statements were a mistake. Note that the Code of Conduct for United States Judges prohibits public endorsement or opposition of political candidates. Anyway, the WaPo had a good piece today discussing why she shouldn't have said what she did - https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/justice-ginsburgs-inappropriate-comments-on-donald-trump/2016/07/12/981df404-4862-11e6-bdb9-701687974517_story.html

(20,998 posts)So the Old Gray Lady has a pearl-clutching moment...and I am NOT referring to RBG.
Donald Trump is the least qualified public figure to eye the Presidency in many years, except for perhaps Sarah Palin. And before the NYT gets all high and mighty, two words: "Iraq War." Where were your editorial sensibilities as you cheerleaded one of the worst foreign policy mistakes ever? Thank God RBG has the courage to speak out. She actually feels has a stake in the course of this country. Sadly, it appears the NYT has a stake in their ad rates and subscription coverage, and will say or do just about anything to inflate both. SHUT IT, NYT! Two more words, an initial and an asterisk: George W. Bush*.

Unless we elect a Dem Senate, it is entirely possible we will have a 6 member SC by the end of Hillary's first term.

(82,849 posts)If you're all upset about Justice Ginsburg calling Trump a faker and expressing a general distaste for the man while Trump has no cases in the pipeline to come before the Court, but you weren't upset about Justice Scalia going duck hunting with Vice President Cheney in Louisiana when Cheney had a case wending its way through the federal appellate system, then your upset should not be heard. Similarly, if you weren't upset by Justice O'Connor expressing her opinion on election night 2000 and then still joining in the opinion in Bush v. Gore a few weeks later, you don't get to be upset about Justice Ginsburg's remarks now.
And, in case it needs to be said, there's a huge (maybe even yuuuge or bigly) difference between the timing and circumstances of Justice Ginsburg's comments and the circumstances of Justice O'Connor and Justice Scalia.
