6. Being Jewish myself, when I see *landsmen* enablers, it rankles me....

Especially since, when the shit hits the fan, it will be a zero sum game. Or "gain."

7. Being Jewish also, I despise when it is brought up for no reason.

His being Jewish has zero to do with the article.

Any Jew with a sense of history, in other words, should be mindful of what propaganda s/he helps propagate.

It isn't relative to the story and is nothing but prejudicial. It has no relevance to the story, whatsoever. I think it is ironic that it is this thread in which you call him out given he is actually doing the right thing.

I have increasingly less patience with fellow Jews who are willing apparatchiks of the status quo.

What's interesting about the OP is that Wolf is suddenly realizing that in the context of the venomous rise of modern GOP racism, anti-Semitism, and hysterical xenophobia, his own Jewishness might be a "problem" for these people.

It was that aspect that prompted my response.

However, seems like lots of projection going on as the article says nothing about Blitzer's thoughts/feelings and there are plenty of people who "go along to get a long". Being Jewish, we certainly can hold our people to a higher standard, but when that becomes grist for the mill, how is it any different than people who hold them up as examples?

What I find troubling is making one's "group" the issue when it isn't.

13. I understand. And when "we" single out our own like that, does it also signal permission

...for others to do the same, for whatever reason?

Often, not good ones.

I don't have easy answers.

It's just that I found it interesting that now, finally, Blitzer is coming to understand, in some small way, the ramifications of the monster he helped create (to be sure, also in a small way -- he's much more dull than he is egregious or toxic, but he's also kind of squandered his perch, as it were, until this almost "too late" moment...)

I mean, our tribe, sadly, has no shortage of assholes, either.

Don't get me started on Sheldon Adelson!

(I was just using shonda, in regards to him, earlier today...!)

It is a fine line, indeed. It is similar to criticizing one's own family in front of others, and suddenly everyone thinks they now have permission to "go nuts" and say anything they want.

I agree our 'family' has it's share of assholes (Adelson is but one, as a gay man, I also include Roy Cohn immediately), and I have little concern when they are targeted, except when it is because they are Jewish. Frankly, I see more people willing to "attack" someone for being Jewish and it being acceptable among many types, including on the left, and I find that very upsetting. Some seem to think sometimes anti-Semitism is "ok" depending on the circumstance, and that is my concern when doors seem to be left open for those types to slither through.

Fun side thread.

15. It was -- it is. Happy Havdalah.

If I may ask, because I've been curious about this too, do you find, being gay as well, that you have similar feelings about, say, Log Cabin Republicans?

I mean I can't understand any gay and/or black (or brown, etc.) and/or female and/or Jewish person ever voting Republican. Though each group has their share of sociopathic assholes, of course.

But as a Jew, I have my particular word for it, from history. I recognize as a middle aged white dude, though, I would not be able to "call out" some other group's enabling hypocrites similarly. Though enabling hypocrites they are.

In any case, taking it back to Havdalah -- we need that "week of peace" more than ever. Except the GOP convention is coming, so never mind.

And I remember his timid response to Dick Cheney's "you're out of line wolf". I remember post Katrina he had to get into line...he was figuring out stuff night after night, and he said something like these people are so poor and so black.

He is a dildo, at best, and the perfect voice for today's cable news. I never have seen a more wisp of a man so unsure of what to say. He is perfect for CNN.
