KNOXVILLE (News Sentinel) -

Firefighters didn't have to reach for an extinguisher when they were called to a cooking fire at a North Knoxville apartment this week.

They simply turned on the shower head.

In what Knoxville Fire Department Capt. D.J. Corcoran called "a first in our books," a woman attempted to cook a brisket over an open flame in her bathtub, he said.

Fire crews responded Monday evening to 4834 Scheel Road to find the middle-aged woman fanning light smoke from her apartment and a melting fiberglass tub in the bathroom, he said.

The fire captain highlighted the incident to stress that more than 50 percent of all residential fires are cooking-related.

"With that said," Corcoran noted, "most all of those documented fires are in the kitchen."

daughters to fend for themselves for a few months. One day the girls decided it would be fun to have a bbq so they pulled their charcoal grille into the basement and lit it. We were getting ready to leave for a movie and I kept smelling smoke. I investigated and decided it must be coming from next door. We knocked, but no one answered. We called the fire department and waited for them to arrive. The firemen pounded on the door and were about to break it in when the girls opened their door. Thick black smoke poured out of the house and the girl with tears streaming from her eyes said, "Everything is ok." The firemen pushed her out of the way, put on their masks and went in. Minutes later, they pulled the still lit grille out the backdoor.

i do not grill much so i do not know if it is practical but i think a old cast iron claw foot bathtub converted into a charcoal grill would look really cool....obviously outside. obviously on a fireproof surface......
