ormer Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) told a conservative radio host that Donald Trump gets and understands religious liberty, the Huffington Post reports.
Bachmann shared an anecdote: He even said, I dont understand, when I was growing up, everybody said Merry Christmas. Even my Jews would say Merry Christmas. New York City, there are a lot of Jews, and they would even say Merry Christmas. Why cant we even say Merry Christmas anymore?
Bachmann added that Trump had 1950s sensibilities and 1950s common sense, and warned that Hillary Clinton would bring certain destruction and catastrophic decline and a godless United States that will walk into certain catastrophe.

(16,646 posts)I always love it when someone waxes nostalgic about the '50s. Jim Crow is a 1950's era reality. Try being a female in the work place too during the '50s.

I say it all the time around the holidays, and I have yet to be drug off to burned at the stake by the Gestapo.

(2,522 posts)On the other hand, you can say the more inclusive "Happy Holidays" if you don't know the other person's religious affiliation (or lack thereof), affirming how the time of the year is important to us all.

(61,694 posts)that they could not say Merry Christmas to customers. She seemed pretty burned up about it even though she's not religious.

(14,856 posts)I work retail and there are all kinds of things that I'm not supposed to say to customers.
You'd think Happy Holidays would satisfy everyone, but some Christians (like Michelle Bachmann) get very offended by generic holiday greetings. Best to just say "Thank you for shopping at XYZ!" no matter what time of year it is, rather than make the employees try to guess which holiday greeting is most appropriate for each customer.

(53,955 posts)The wording makes it appear Bachmann is the one who made the comment; she is not. It was Trump! Now, is she making up the story? Possibly, but given Trump's history, personally, I believe it is something he would say.

(29,503 posts)and I don't mean the proverbial 'when her lips are moving', I mean this:
On many occasions in the past (probably every controversial claim she makes), she'll do a Big Lie - say something SO crazy but with a kernel of truth, and THEN she'll say something like this:
"Short people fart snotsicles. AND I'LL REPEAT THAT: SHORT PEOPLE FART SNOTSICLES." (or "I'll say that again:" or "I mean exactly that:" Whatever her lie-of-the-day is: say it once, make sure it's outrageous - wait for the reaction (gasps, wide eyes, etc.), then SPEAK UP and say clearly that you are going to repeat yourself, and then repeat yourself, saying the exact same thing, but louder this time.
And here is a journalist who covered her explaining, in a different way than I did, Bachmann's rhetorical schtick:
So, just as I had told the Bachmann spokester I would do, at noon on the second day, I put up a post simply reporting what Bachmann had said without much editorializing and went to lunch, hoping to hear from her later in the day with more explanation.
When I got back to my desk, still no call from Bachmann's office but I learned that my post had been linked to by Drudge, been discussed on Limbaugh, and had generated, in one hour, more traffic than my blog had ever seen in a day.
It kept going. By late afternoon, my friend and colleague Terry Sauer, who monitored the online traffic, sent me a note that said, "Your numbers are approaching Viking-gets-arrested territory."
That afternoon, Bachmann put out a written statement saying: "I am sorry if my words have been misconstrued."

Michelle Bachmann really is the textbook example of the "Drama Queen".

(28,017 posts)Sheesh. It seems that Teh Donald's only goal is to push the line of appropriate behavior out the window, then quit the campaign when he has ruined the entire political landscape of the country.
Any person, ANY person saying even one of the things that pops (or poops) out of his mouth would have that person properly castigated, even shunned. Yet with Teh Donald, he just gets more popular with his demented base.
