The politicization surrounding the killing of two New York Police Department officers over the weekend was amazingly swift. Fox News led the right-wing media charge, immediately claiming Democratic elected officials were somehow responsible for the gun rampage, which began in Baltimore when Ismaaiyl Brinsley allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend, and extended to Brooklyn when the mentally troubled shooter assassinated two police officers, before killing himself on a city subway platform.
On Fox, hosts and guests were sure who was to blame for the tragedy; not the gunman necessarily, but political and community leaders like President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, Mayor Bill de Blasio and MSNBC's Al Sharpton. Why? Because the men, to varying degrees, have spoken out about the troubled relationship between law enforcement and the black community, and raised concerns about two recent high-profile cases, Michael Brown and Eric Garner, in which unarmed black men were killed, and police officers responsible were not indicted.
Against that backdrop of civil protest, former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik told Fox News, "I personally feel that Mayor de Blasio, Sharpton and others like them, they actually have blood on their hands."
"Let's talk about the president as well," responded Fox's Jeanine Pirro, suggesting Obama and Mayor de Blasio were to blame. "The two of them have undoubtedly created racial tensions that worsens, not betters the situation for law enforcement."
Appearing on Fox News, former New York City Mayor Rudolf Giuliani insisted the message from recent Obama "propaganda" was that "everybody should hate the cops." (No such Obama "propaganda" actually exists.)

the article above goes on to look at how when right-wing nut Jerad Miller killed two cops in Vegas earlier in the year, FOX looked the other way and called Miller a lone-wolf, ignoring Miller's ties to violent far-right groups (like the Bundy militia that was threatening law enforcement).
The article concludes: "Once again, Fox paid little attention to those right-wing executions of law enforcement officers."

The chilling details of Sunday's Las Vegas ambush produced public shock and intense media coverage. One major news outlet seemed to lag behind, though: Fox News.
Primetime hosts Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity both ignored the shocking cop-killer story last night, while Megyn Kelly devoted four sentences to it. (By contrast, the story covered extensively during CNN and MSNBC's primetime.) Fox talkers on Monday were still far more interested in debating the prisoner swap of Bowe Bergdahl than they were examining the political ambush in Las Vegas.
For Fox News, the Las Vegas killing spree represents a toxic mix of guns, far-right insurrectionism, tea party implications, and the Cliven Bundy ranch standoff. For Fox News, the story about right-wing gun violence and the seeds of a bloody political revolution present all kinds of problems for the channel and its outspoken hosts, some of whom have previously championed limitless gun rights, insurrectionism, the Tea Party, and racist rancher Bundy.
In the 36 hours after the shooting, Fox News tread lightly around the Las Vegas story, producing regular news updates about the crime spree. But Fox provided almost no commentary, no context, and certainly no collective blame for the executions.
And that's how Fox News deals with right-wing domestic terrorism in America, when it even bothers to acknowledge the killings and the crimes. (The channel barely covered Georgia's courthouse siege last week.) At Fox, the deadly and disturbing events are treated as isolated incidents that are mostly void of politics. And more importantly, on Fox the perpetrators are always portrayed as lone gunmen (and women) who do not represent any cultural or political movement.

On Saturday, a lone mentally ill shooter, not from New York City and not part of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protest movement, executed two NYPD police officers, before killing himself. In June of this year, a couple who had spent time on Clive Bundys ranch executed two Las Vegas police officers, wrapped their bodies in Dont Tread on Me flags, and then shot themselves. Republicans, right wing media and police officials are blaming the NYPD murders on BLM. But why didnt they blame the murders of the Las Vegas officers on the Tea Party movement?
Obviously, the way to honor the two police officers murdered on Saturday is by exploiting their tragic murder for political purposes in a way that actually defies logic. To do this, simply blame the actions of a single lone shooter with a history of mental illness and suicide attempts on a non-violent protest movement which outrageously demands that police not kill people for the crime of being Black. Also claim that Mayor Bill de Blasio, Attorney General Eric Holder and President Barack Obama are to blame but dont bother pretending that there is any evidence for that claim because you wont find it. But if youre Ray Kelly, Rudy Giuliani, Patrick Lynch, George Pataki or Fox News, thats no big deal anyway.
When Jerad and Amanda Miller shot Las Vegas police officers Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo execution style as the two men ate pizza, the Millers said the killing was the start of the revolution and they wrapped the bodies of their victims in the Dont tread on me, flag that has come to symbolize the Tea Party Movement. The couple also Facebook-liked Operation American Spring, Alliance Defending Freedom, the National Rifle Association, The Heritage Foundation, Rand Paul 2016, Three Percenter Nation, Ron Paul, and Drudge Report. In the case of last weeks horrendous NYC police killings (1) the killer wasnt from New York or part of the BLM movement, (2) the killer also attempted to kill his girlfriend, who was not a police officer, (3) Barack Obama, Bill de Blasio, the family of Michael Brown and the family of Eric Garner condemned the murders of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. So, where were the officials tracing back this ideological murder to these organizations and sites? Surely Giuliani, Lynch, Pataki and Fox News would have to agree that the alleged causal connection between deBlasio, Obama, Holder, BLM and the NYPD deaths pales in comparison to The Tea Party movement and the Las Vegas deaths. This is especially true given that the organizers of BLM are explicitly non-violent while many of the organizations involved with the Tea Party and much of the Tea Party movement embraces violence.

On June 8, 2014, white, anti-government, tea party supporters shot and killed two Las Vegas police officers. Conservative media was conspicuously silent.
-snip-
Never mind that President Obama called for anyone who protests these shootings and grand jury decisions to do so peacefully. Never mind that the president has said that theres no excuse for violence. The irony of a black president is that his most innocuous utterances that America still has racial problems are interpreted by conservatives as radical and anti-white. Never mind that a majority of cop killers have been white. Conservatives blame police killings of, and violence against blacks, on black lawlessness run amok. Never mind that the #BlackLivesMatter movement has condemned the murders of officers Liu and Ramos. Conservatives blame the movement collectively for the murder of officers Liu and Ramos.
This conservative penchant for collective blaming was absent on June 8, when Jerad and Amanda Miller both white shot and killed Las Vegas police officers Igor Soldo and Alyn Beck, as they had lunch at a strip mall. The couple dragged the officers bodies from their booth, draped Becks body with the yellow Gasden flag popular with the tea party movement, and pinned a note to Soldos body reading This is the beginning of the revolution. ...
Reports surfaced of Jerad Millers anti-government posts to Facebook, and Alex Jones Infowars message board including a post titled, The Police (to kill or not to kill). The Millers camped out at Cliven Bundys ranch, where Bundys militia pointed guns at sheriffs deputys and threatened to kill federal officers. Jerad Miller was even interviewed at the ranch, before being booted for his radical views.
Conservatives were less than outraged. Instead of blaming Cliven Bundy, Alex Jones, or the tea party movement, they tried to paint the Millers as radical leftists. Conservative media refused to call the Las Vegas shooting terrorism.

(22,976 posts)A 2nd Amendment-loving guy who was himself carrying a handgun tried to get the drop on the Millers, but his poor judgement paid off in the form of his death by gunshot.
This particular grim scenario completely undercuts the "good guys with guns" narrative. In this case, it just added to the overall body count, as it likely would in any similar situation, if one simply used common sense.

(22,976 posts)the Bastille Day aftermath. It's their one and only message for all grim occasions. Newt and Geraldo and O'Reilly and Giuliani all hand-wringing in unison, "Obama, Obama, Obama."
Getting rid of cable this coming week. Just too toxic.
