(58,785 posts)speech is not good at the Republican National Convention. Question is, who did it? Trump is clueless and ignorant enough to not realize how inevitably it'd be caught. Melania? The staffers assigned to her certainly have responsibility in that they should have vetted every single word, but they're part of the gang that can't shoot straight lead by someone who can't find his butt to scratch without help.

I relate to our First Lady in many ways. She's a kind person and a person of integrity who has been torn down and demeaned. Even those on the left who try to be fair have turned a cheek.
This was bound to happen. Not just at DU - but everywhere that sees a double standard. She's not special and I'm of the mindset that turn about when warranted is fair play.
Words are important. Own them. She said those words and she needs to be forced to own them. No special treatment for the candidate's spouse.

(10,951 posts)1. She claimed that she wrote the speech (with little assistance).
2. The Communications guy is now saying that a speech writer team wrote it.
3. Part of her speech is out right plagerism at the worse and extremely similar to Michelle Obama's speech at the best.
So bottom line, she either lied about whether or not she wrote the speech or she plagerized Michelle's speech. Either way she has been seriously humiliated in public. It is symptomatic to how bad a campaign that Trump is running. An experienced staff wouldn't let shit like this happen. Trump and his family think that they know best. (2,792 posts)This entire convention is necessarily dominated by the Trump family, since mainstream Republicans were ashamed to attend and Donald Trump (and his ego) designed it to be that way. It was Trump's son or son-in-law who likely wrote the plagiarized speech, and Trump's wife lied about writing it herself. The disgrace was a family effort. Melania sold out a long time ago when she married one of the most detestable beings on this planet. She did not have to marry the slime, and she did not have to go on stage and make a fool out of herself by lying to cover for another detestable family member. Melania is not an innocent nor a child. It is demeaning to wives in general to treat her that way.
JustAnotherGen
(31,781 posts)Hortensis
(58,785 posts)him that a staffer was assigned to every member of the family. Melania was the most important, so Campaign Manager Manifort was assigned to her, and he had an assistant. Regardless of who wrote the speech, Manifort's official duty was to vet every single word and make sure this simply could not happen.
If no one's fired, it may be because the guilty person is not firable. Trump himself has boasted that he was reviewing his wife's speech even though she was very intelligent, etc., and he's easily clueless enough not to realize that plagiarism is picked up in moments these days. She claimed she wrote it and could also conceivably be too ignorant to realize.
In any case that it was a Democratic first lady whose words were plagiarized is pretty funny. For someone who's been inadvertently involved in the nastiness that was last night's convention, Michelle is being shown off pretty nicely. Bet her mouth fell open last night while listening. She's probably also among those with genuine sympathy for what Melania's moment of glory turned into. Never been there or done that, but...

When you put yourself in the political fray, you become fair game to be criticized for what you say/do politically speaking. (15,220 posts)First off, she obviously gave a plagiarized speech. What if this were reversed and the spouse of a Democratic candidate had done this? The right would be all over it.
I'm not suggesting that we aren't "better" than this. We do generally uphold a higher standard as far as mudslinging.
My "beef" with Melania is the fact that, in my opinion, she has no intention of being "First Lady" were it that Trump wins in November. That post is going to go to Ivanka Trump. There is no doubt in my mind about that.
That brings some questions to mind. For example, is it that Melania doesn't want to assume the role, or it is that Donald doesn't think she's capable of assuming the role? If it's her decision, that's one thing Let me repeat that. If it's HER decision, then that's one thing.
If that decision has been made for Melania (which is what I suspect based on Trump's habit of demeaning women, and the fact that Melania has not been a participant in much of Trump's campaign up to this point), then I would be critical of Melania for allowing someone to control her.
If it is offensive to anyone that I make a negative comment about a woman who is willing to allow herself to be controlled and manipulated for a price, then so be it. Women should be "better" than this. It's 2016. Women should not be congratulated for marrying well. Women should be congratulated for their own, personal accomplishments.
