(31,974 posts)But there is a thing called common sense which some have. I am not dependent on a "they" telling me what to think.

I think what you are calling "common sense" is instead assumptions based on minimal facts but prejudices and rumor.

But unlike those two attacks, the one in Munich appeared, based on initial evidence, to have no overt links to the Islamic State or other terrorist groups, officials said Saturday. Nor did it seem to be directly linked to the wave of migration that has fueled racial, ethnic and religious tensions in Germany and across Europe.
Instead, according to accounts by the police, prosecutors, and neighbors and schoolmates of Mr. Sonboly, this most recent assault appeared to be of a less ideological and more personal sort: a sudden, violent outlet for a quietly troubled young man.
There were indications that Mr. Sonbolys rampage might not have been entirely without political overtones. It was carried out on the fifth anniversary of a massacre in Norway by Anders Behring Breivik, a right-wing extremist who killed 77 people. Asked about a possible link based on the date, the Munich police chief, Hubertus Andrä, said that this connection is obvious and was part of their investigation.

(2,810 posts)I've only heard 1 semi-anonymous witness on CNN say that.

(3,967 posts)i heard that witness on cnn and she sounded credible. i think the woman who spoke about this may have been the only witness to it. the police will likely check out her story. seems like an odd thing to lie about. she also said she was muslim - which is something they can easily check out. it would be odd for a muslim, first thing after observing the most horrific thing imaginable, to make up a lie to make the attacker seem motivated by her own religion.

(31,974 posts)celebrating what you had done and a Christian terrorist group would be claiming credit for it. Yep, I'm sure that would happen. I was told by another poster that Charles Whitman and the Kent State National Guard were terrorists who killed to promote their version of Christianity. Learn something everyday...

(3,580 posts)I think Islam is messed up but I don't know how you make the leap this was Islamist terrorism based on what he yelled. Or are you assuming anyone who is Muslim who commits mass murder is a muslim terrorist based on yelling 2 words.

(3,967 posts)The NYTimes article has the police give a statement that would normally justify stating it as a hypothesis but not as a conclusion:
There were indications that Mr. Sonbolys rampage might not have been entirely without political overtones. It was carried out on the fifth anniversary of a massacre in Norway by Anders Behring Breivik, a right-wing extremist who killed 77 people. Asked about a possible link based on the date, the Munich police chief, Hubertus Andrä, said that this connection is obvious and was part of their investigation.
We must assume that he was aware of this attack, Chief Andrä said.
SticksnStones
(2,108 posts)Written material on such attacks was found in his room, and Munich's police chief spoke of links to the massacre by Norway's Anders Behring Breivik.

But there isn't any evidence he was a devout Muslim. There is, however, lots of evidence he had an obsession with school killing sprees, and had mental health problems.
