It does kind of make sense. The republicans didn't fight very hard to keep Trump from getting the nod. They figure this Russian thing will blow up (Trump will let them have the Ukraine and Estonia to settle his personal debt) the democrats will impeach him, and Pence is more along the lines of what the republicans wanted all along.
