(18,402 posts)It has been these ordinary citizens telling their stories that has been the most compelling and the most inspiring. I am so in awe of the American people this week.
The Khans are amazing.

(4,187 posts)Don't make assumptions about people you don't know. Most Muslim men may be male chauvinists, but that doesn't mean this specific man is. All indications are that he is a good man who cares about his country.
A true fundamentalist Muslim wouldn't have let his wife go on the stage at all. Her hair and neck wouldn't be showing, and she wouldn't have makeup on. These people are clearly not fundamentalists.
And maybe their decision not to have her speak was influenced by the highly misogynistic, patriarchal culture they were both born into.
Who knows.

(4,187 posts)Should we read something into the actions of every male speaker who didn't have his wife speak in his place?
We were all born into a culture and society that see women as second-class citizens inferior in every way to men. Indeed, visiting DU on any given day will provide multiple examples of this. I am betting that this man is a lot less misogynistic and a much kinder person than many -- perhaps most -- of the people on DU.
It is really offensive to assume that someone is a male chauvinist because of his religion. Such assumptions and statements go against the ideals that were expressed and celebrated at the convention.
