Roe vs. Wade will be overturned if Donald Trump wins, Mike Pence says

http://www.latimes.com/nation/politics/trailguide/la-na-democratic-convention-2016-live-pence-says-roe-v-wade-will-be-1469737388-htmlstory.html

GOP vice presidential nominee Mike Pence on Thursday predicted Roe vs. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion, would be overturned if Donald Trump is elected president.

“I’m pro-life and I don’t apologize for it,” he said during a town hall meeting here. “We’ll see Roe vs. Wade consigned to the ash heap of history where it belongs.”

The comments — made in a conservative stronghold that strongly supported Texas Sen. Ted Cruz over Trump in the Michigan primary — were part of a broader argument Pence has been making on the stakes of the election: Voters need to consider that the next president will likely select multiple Supreme Court justices.

Pence said Trump would appoint strict constitutionalists in the mold of the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

So all that religious far right babbling inanity in their platform, you know, criminalizing reproductive choice, teaching the bible in public schools, declaring internet porn a "public health crisis", rolling back equality for LGBT citizens- yeah, they're serious about it.

...it's not like anyone can say they weren't warned.

http://nymag.com/thecut/2016/07/mike-pence-condoms-very-poor-protection-against-stds.html

CNN asked then-congressman Pence to appear alongside Democrat Jan Schakowsky of Illinois for a discussion. When Wolf Blitzer asked Pence what he thought of Powell endorsing condom use, Pence had this to say:

Well, Wolf, I think it was — given the enormous stature that Colin Powell rightly has, not only in America but in the world community, it was a sad day... And the truth is that Colin Powell had an opportunity here to reaffirm this president's commitment to abstinence as the best choice for our young people, and he chose not to do that in the first instance, but — and so I think it's very sad. The other part is that, frankly, condoms are a very, very poor protection against sexually transmitted diseases, and in that sense, Wolf, this was — the secretary of state maybe inadvertently misleading millions of young people and endangering lives.

Uh-huh. Condoms, the physical barrier which the CDC says are "highly effective" at preventing STDs, offer poor protection, according to Mike Pence, M.D. But he didn't stop there:

I just simply believe the only truly safe sex, Wolf, as the president believes, is no sex. And we ought to, with leaders of the stature of the secretary of state, we ought to be sending a message to kids across the country and the opportunity had across the world that abstinence is the best choice for young people. But let's be clear, last year, the National Institute of Health, Wolf, and some 28 separate experts said at least a half dozen to ten sexually transmitted diseases for which condom use has zero preventative value. The secretary of state is simply wrong.

ask assholes like Pence if they ever had pre-marital or extra-marital sex? That would be the first question I would ask these fucking pricks. Hardly anyone these days is a virgin when they get married. Force them to discuss reality, not some biblical standard that the vast majority of people ignore.

I vaguely remember the crap around Colin Powell being in trouble because he didn't "promote abstinence".

Right, people in Africa were dying of AIDS, and he's supposed to tell them "just don't have sex"

The left has done a poor job of making sure women know what this would mean to them. It's a right that is exercised by a large % of women in their lifetimes and it is 100% gone should Trump get into office.

Abortion will be gone and they will close planned parenthood all together. Access to birth control will be severely limited. They want to go back to the dark ages for women. It's all about controlling what women do with their bodies and punishing women for sex. The Taliban can happen here.

the beltway and operate on these assumptions which are at least 10 years out of date, if not more.

This translates, to be sure, into a reflexive hesitation to push social issues as hard as they ought to be pushed, and it definitely explains the lag in our party's response to the sea changes in public opinion being driven by the Millennial generation.

This is why it took as long as it did for our leadership to come around on marriage equality. Too many advisors live in fear of the mythical "values voter" of the 2004 election, which was never really that all powerful to begin with, and certainly isn't now.

Most Americans are pro-choice. Most Americans, now, support marijuana legalization. Strong emphasis on personal freedom issues like this would HELP us, not hurt us.

Gail Dines has pretty clearly declared which side she's on, namely, the side of Rick Santorum, he AFA and Right Wing Christian Conservatism.

Not surprising to people who have paid attention, however, she never really had much of a following to begin with.

I suspect most people on our side understand that even though there may be entertainment media and things we don't agree with or particularly like for ourselves (Nickelback springs to mind) in a free and pluralistic society censoring what consenting adults can read or watch is never a good idea.

Look, people can become behaviorally habituated to anything, to the point of it causing a subjectively detrimental effect in their lives- shopping, watching "ice road truckers", eating ice cream, etc.

However, "porn addiction" is a bullshit term spread by people with an anti-porn agenda; mostly, members of the religious right and their allies- trying to define perfectly normal behavior as somehow "addictive and harmful". Rinse, repeat, same old same old.
