He's a bigot clumsily attempting to act like he's not one.
We have all seen this act in our personal lives. A white, male, 70 year old bigot, trying to convince himself that he's really not a bigot and trying to convince his contemporaries that everyone misunderstands him. In fact, we understand him all too well.

Not only did he prove he is racist with that one-size-fits-all depiction of being black in America, but he spread his hateful notions far and wide with his "outreach to blacks."

(34,373 posts)voters", but Eugene Robinson just eviscerated that lame ass argument, saying that if he really wanted to speak to the Black community, he wouldn't have turned down every invitation to actually speak to African Americans. Don the Con was actually talking to Whites in the Philly &Washington D.C. suburbs, saying, "see, I'm not a racist so you can vote for me."

(14,853 posts)... come from watching low-information media coverage of inner city riots, the Black Panthers openly carrying guns in public (back in the 60's), etc.
