Top Conservative Evangelical Leader Supports New Obama Immigration Policy, Urges GOP To ‘Applaud The President’

Dr. Richard Land, a top conservative evangelical leader, came out strongly in favor of President Obama’s new immigration policy today, slamming Republicans who would call the move “amnesty.”

On the same day that President Obama announced a plan to give young undocumented people the ability to work in the United States, Land told ThinkProgress at the Faith & Freedom Conference in Washington, D.C. that Mitt Romney and other Republican leaders need to take a hard look at their own stances on immigration issues, especially in regard to youth “haven’t done anything wrong.”

Providing help to kids is far from “amnesty,” Land argued, and people calling it that “need a course in remedial English.” He also encouraged Mitt Romney and Congress to embrace the President’s policy:

(snip)
LAND: Yeah, I would say to the Romney campaign, this is the right thing to do. You should applaud the president for doing the right thing and encourage Congress to follow up by codifying it into law.

Why shouldn't Land support it?

Repukes do it all the time, they're still bigoted aholes. Of course Obama is right to stand up and do something about immigrants, and he doesn't need some exploitative repuke using him.

Southern Baptist ‘ethics chief’ reprimanded for racial remarks and plagiarism

Richard Land, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, was officially reprimanded twice on Friday and had his radio show canceled following a series of racial remarks and about Trayvon Martin’s slaying and evidence that he had plagiarized conservative publications.

“We reprimand Dr. Land for his hurtful, irresponsible, insensitive, and racially charged words on March 31, 2012 regarding the Trayvon Martin tragedy,” Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission said in a statement. “We also convey our own deepest sympathies to the family of Trayvon Martin for the loss they have suffered. We, too, express our sorrow, regret, and apologies to them for Dr. Land’s remarks.”

“We further reprimand Dr. Land for quoting material without giving attribution on the Richard Land Live! (RLL) radio show, thereby unwisely accepting practices that occur in the radio industry, and we acknowledge that instances of plagiarism occurred because of his carelessness and poor judgment,” the statement added ...

his own rightfully ugly image. This Land is the definition of what is wrong with the 'faith community' and it is disgusting to see him touted here.
His comments regrading the President's words about Trayvon Martin: President Obama “poured gasoline on the racialist fires to gin up the black vote for an African-American president.”

I will not bother with his anti gay hate as many on DU dig anti gay diatribes or don't see them as being as bad as attacks on other groups.

From a practical standpoint making the children of undocumented citizens doesn't cost or change a thing. These people are already here and have nowhere to go. There's, most obviously, the compassionate view that this is only right and humane but that's not how snake oil salesmen like Land work.

A couple of thoughts...firstly, that Land being in Texas knows how damaging the rushpublican demogaugery about immigration and Mexicans in specific is going to hurt the party at the polls. This move can, and hopefully, will energize Hispanics throughout the Southwest who have something to gain from President Obama's re-election and will show up at the polls. It could also lock in that growing block as a solid Democratic vote for years to come and do to Texas and Arizona what's happened in California and now Nevada and Colorado. Without making serious inroads into this bloc they will have real difficulties winning the Presidency no matter how much money they throw at it.

Next...Land wasn't Mitten's biggest fan during the primaries (kissing up to Ricky instead)...and methinks he's still not warm and fuzzy with having a believer of magic underware as his candidate. We've seen Willard tap dance around and pander from one right wing group to another...it'll be interesting to see if he responds to Land or if Land makes even more noise.

Lots of cons are. Around here, contractors are a huge lobbying force for having the immigrants legal-ish. The US CoC too as always been a supporter of having legal-ish immigrants. By "ish", I mean decriminalized just being here, yet still exploitable.
