I am beyond disbelief at the STUPIDITY at this Texas school, and with the Fort Bend police who carried on with the blatant ignorance that had to be involved! (Besides the fact that it was only $2).
I went to the lunch line and they said my 2 Dollar Bill was fake, Danesiah told Ted Oberg Investigates. They gave it to the police. Then they sent me to the police office. A police officer said I could be in big trouble....
The long line of IGNORANT people that this CRAZINESS had to go through before the bank explained that there is such thing as a 2 Dollar Bill is unfathomable! They should all be fired for sheer stupidity!

That was $100 at a bank.

(5,902 posts)In southern California, where fake Benjamins are quite commonplace, the last thing one would want to do is take the offending bill to the bank. They'll seize it, give you a robotic explanation of why you can't be reimbursed, and send you on your way - sans your 100 dollars.

That guy's store was about 4 blocks from a major horse racing track and, of course, liquor store near a race track, the guy got bombed with 2's.
Since this wasn't a big account, the guy would pay my dad in cash. So, my allowance used to be a $2 bill each month. A little older and it was 2 of them. Then $2 a week. Then i turned 15 and my dad said i needed to make my own money. No more $2 bills for me.

"We see a disproportionate impact on minority youth when it comes to these charges," attorney Mani Nezami said. "African-American and Hispanic boys in particular, but girls as well, tend to be overcriminalized for offenses that one might speculate if they weren't, they wouldn't be seeing a criminal charge."
SNIP
Nezami represents a 13-year-old Cy-Fair ISD Cook Middle School student facing two to 10 years in a Texas prison for passing off what turned out to be a fake $10 bill.
It looks real, and his parents say it felt real.
"The friend pulls out a $10 bill and his friend thinks that it's real," Nezami said. "So they get to the lunch line... he buys his lunch with it, takes his lunch and goes and eats it."
After school, officials did the forgery test and realized it was a fake $10 bill, according to Nezami.
"He comes to school the next day and he gets arrested and charged with a third-degree felony." Nezami said. "He's in seventh grade. He doesn't handle money that much."

Really, they need to get rid of the $1 bill, and replace it with a coin. It is strange that the US is still using pretty much the same coins/bills since WWII when the rest of the world has moved on, and now use coins for most things up to about $3-5 in developed countries.

over the last 50 years, all we need now are a 10 cent, new octagonal and smaller 50 cent, $1 and $2 coins. Get rid of the cent first, then the nickel and quarter last. Round all cash transactions to the nearest 10 cents.
Each of these coins would then have a different tactile "feel" so visually challenged folks could easily discern them from one another.

One day we needed cash to pay a workman. He refused to take them. He told us they were worth more than two dollars ,it wouldn't be fair.
Very honest

(36,745 posts)A green seal Federal Reserve Note $2 bill is only worth $2.
If it was the red seal United States Note $2 bills, then he was correct.
Travis_0004
(5,417 posts)Which also explains the confusion a bit. Most people have probably never seen a red seal note if they are below a certain age.
roamer65
(36,745 posts)Most people still don't know the difference. Red seals were true fiat money, issued directly by the Treasury. No interest on them like FRN's.
Red seals were the true "greenback", dating all the way back to the Civil War.
A while back I got a worn one in change from a coin shop. Gave it to my mom and she was beside herself with it...lol.

(5,417 posts)Look at the picture. The bill is pre series 1976, which looks different than todays 2 dollar bill, and I would bet a lot of people on this forum have never seen that bill before in my life.
Still an overreaction. Even if the money actually was fake, its an overreaction.

I wonder if it would have been different if her name were Courtney or Tammy Lynn or Addison Marie or similar.

(54,330 posts)I work with many banks overseas, and I often get asked to take $2 bills, Susan Anthony Dollars and Eisenhower Dollars back to the States. I just spend them, although I get odd looks, especially from younger sales personnel who weren't even born when these things were put into circulation. I find it insulting, though, that people trained to work as a cashier are not even told what is legal tender in the USA (which includes all federal coins and banknotes since 1792, by the way), and sometimes treat money with skepticism. I should also add that I have been treated with frowns (though never threats of arrest) for spending $2 bills, Anthony dollars, Eisenhower dollars and even Kennedy half dollars this past summer in Massachusetts, California, Virginia and even Washington, DC. Less so in Texas, although the presence of the largest coin dealership in the country in Dallas probably makes this less likely to happen in Dallas than elsewhere in the state. Funnily enough, the sales people who least knew what they were looking at--the summer interns on Cape Cod from Eastern Europe (Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Lithuania, etc)--were the most accepting of the fact that there were things in America that they had never known about. It was the European-Americans in California and Virginia that gave me the most WTF comments.
This doesn't happen just in the USA, by the way. The Germans used to put out one 5 D-Mark commemorative coin after another in the 1990s. I once tried to pay with one at an open-air market in our town, and the young sales girl haughtily tossed it back in my face and said "this is not ours." I then went "right back at ya," and asked her if she was Turkish or Polish. She got really huffy at that one, and the owner of the stand, who knew me well, came over to see what the problem was. She showed him the coin and "accused me" of wanting to pay with it. Being a coin collector, himself, he instantly recognized it for what it was, thanked me profusely (to the girl's great consternation), and that was that. Well, almost anyway. She insisted on telling me she was German. I said, "you can't be. You just told me a German coin was not from your country." She suddenly found it urgent that she serve another customer.

I have had $2 bills as well but not lately, this has me wanting to track down a few.
50 cent coins used to be all over too but haven't seen one in awhile.

(36,745 posts)The Kennedy half dollar, since 2002, can only be ordered directly from the US Mint. They have not been released for general circulation since that date.

(3,263 posts)No logical reason at all for that
being a coin and worth fifty cents it should have just rolled with my other loose change
Can't say why I felt impelled to rid my self of the odd one

(36,745 posts)They are used of plastic money. The concept of hard money is foreign to them...lol. Not surprised you got blank looks.
I remember silver in change, along side cupronickel clad coins. I can still tell by the sound if a silver coin is in a cashiers till. It has a distinct higher pitched ring to it, rather than the "thunk" of base metal.

It was a 1953 $2 bill which is worth a little more the $2 depending on its condition.

(860 posts)sort of and recently.
I was driving through a PA town off 81 headed to get some food in me.
My vehicle was brushed against by an adjacent vehicle.
I tried to pull off to the right with my right signal on. I finally found
a McD's parking lot to pull into on the right.
The girl that i felt hit my vehicle pulled in and started off on how
I hit her. She said she called 911 because I was trying to get away.
All this for a light scratching/bumping.
Later that trip I stopped off a back road in GA for an energy drink.
The drink was 2.17 and I gave the cashier 3. then I found I had .20 in my pocket and gave that to her saying maybe this would help. sorry, no.
She pulled over her calculator and sat there looking at it. I finally said just give me
1.03 change.
Moral of both stories is it's getting real stupid out there folks!
