Arizona has heard this all before
In the Trump universe, illegal immigration is the nucleus of all that ails the United States. It’s the catalyst of crime and the bane of every police department. It’s the great drain on national resources and an urgent threat to our national security.
We’ve seen this all before in Arizona. Russell Pearce and Joe Arpaio, Andrew Thomas and Paul Babeu. Phoenix is the test market for border demagoguery and so Trump naturally brought his own brand of this toxin to the place that has swallowed the most.

Our state eventually came to its senses and dispatched Brand Pearce and his Senate Bill 1070 immigration law. We will now wait and see if the American people do the same with Brand Trump"

These are not country club Republicans. When Del Webb first conceived Sun City he went up to the auto plants of Michigan and recruited blue collar workers into his dream of retirement in a warm inexpensive place where everyman (and his wife) could swim and play golf and attend free concerts just like the rich guys. And that's what a lot of Sun City was and still is.
Disclaimer: I don't live there, but close enough to know many wonderful old-school Democrats, some now departed, who live (and lived) there.

(12,611 posts)a connection with "Uncle Joe" that has to be taken into account. Sun City is unincorporated and therefore has no police force (or municipal services of any kind). It has to rely on the sparse deployment of Maricopa County sheriff cars and men.
"Uncle Joe" set up a posse system (like a block watch) whereby resident volunteers patrol the streets and help out at ambulance calls and crowd events in county supplied official cars. Training and equipment is provided. This gives the residents a measure of security they want and like. Keep in mind that seniors feel, and are, especially vulnerable.
They don't know if the next sheriff will keep this system going, but they know "Uncle Joe" will. So, it's not all ideological (although much of it is) but some is self interest and trust.

The poll might be the first time any candidate has topped Arpaio in a public opinion survey in recent memory. Penzone's lead in the poll, commissioned by his campaign, is within the margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percent.
Penzone lost a three-person race to Arpaio in 2012 by six percentage points, but Arpaio barely garnered more than 50 percent of the vote, his poorest performance of any of his six campaigns.
