Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane said it wasnt a spur-of-the-moment decision to thrust himself into a situation that has drawn national attention all week and undoubtedly will now put him in a spotlight he hasnt before felt.
I thought about it for a week or so and I just think its okay for me to do it, said Lane, who sat during the national anthem before the Seahawks 23-21 preseason win over the Oakland Raiders on Thursday night.
Lane said he did it mostly to show support for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sat during the anthem in a game last Friday saying he was protesting the treatment of people of color in the United States, and particularly issues with police.
I wasnt trying to say anything, just standing behind Kaepernick, said Lane, who is in his fifth year with the Seahawks after being taken in the 2012 draft.

(1,074 posts)That's great....I was hoping more players would do this but we need to see some white players doing it. They need to show support to what is happening to the race of their friends that they play with. Also, if the white players did it, maybe sarah palin and her ilk would be muzzled! Would they dare condemn, with such filth, the white players doing it? Or is it only so horrible when a black person does it??

(36,833 posts)Colin Kaepernick kneels during the national anthem, with Eric Reid to his right and Nate Boyer to his left.
On early Thursday afternoon, at the Westin Hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, a black NFL player, a biracial NFLplayer and a white former Green Beret met for over an hour.
And thats how it came to pass that safety Eric Reid and Colin Kaepernick knelt during the playing of the national anthem while Nate Boyer stood to Kaepernicks left, with his right hand over his heart.
It was a remarkable scene. And Reid explained how it unfolded after the 49ers preseason finale Thursday.
The meeting was launched when Boyer, 35, penned a thoughtful open letter to Kaepernick, which inspired the quarterback to invite Boyer to the game as his guest. During their meeting in the hours before the game, Boyer showed the players text messages from military members who were hurt by Kaepernicks decision to sit on a bench during the national anthem.
Reid had a series of conversations with Kaepernick during the week, but hadnt decided to join him during the national anthem as of Thursday morning. The meeting with Boyer provided the solution to a misgiving Reid had about not standing during the anthem.

(6,911 posts)The nonstop and coordinated effort by the right-wing echo chamber to grandstand on Colin Kapernick's 2-minute protest just blew up in their face.
Here's the play-by-play:
Aging quarterback is pissed off for whatever reason and doesn't stand
Media complains he sits
Quarterback days it's really a silent protest
Hypocrite media goes apoplectic over silent protest
Media overreach draws more protesters
After hearing four days of nonstop Facebook grandstanding, that act of overreach pissed off more people.
Repeat. That is how escalation happens. In this case, to the detriment of the grandstanding, right-wing echo chamber.
