IWAIZUMI, Iwate Prefecture--The government of Iwaizumi, a town still reeling from the death and destruction wrought by Typhoon No. 10, issued evacuation orders for all residents on Sept. 4 for the approaching Typhoon No. 12.

The order means 9,947 residents from 4,587 households are required to head to evacuation centers set up in the town.

Typhoon No. 10 last week caused serious flooding in Iwaizumi that left 13 people dead and damaged infrastructure, including roads.

Mayor Katsumi Date said Sept. 4 that eight residents are unaccounted for in the town.

As of 7 a.m. on Sept. 4, 547 residents from 252 households in five districts of the town were stranded.

Lionrock death toll at 17 as Japan braces for new typhoon
TOKYO —

The death toll from Typhoon Lionrock has risen to 17 in Japan, with several people still missing, and officials said Sunday a new storm threatens the country’s southwest.

Two more deaths were confirmed Sunday from the major typhoon which hit northern Japan last week, said an official in the hard-hit prefecture of Iwate.

The death toll is now 17 including the two confirmed on the northern main island of Hokkaido.

Now a new typhoon is bearing down on the country’s main island of Kyushu in the southwest.

As of 4 p.m., Typhoon Namtheun was some 90 kilometers southwest of the city of Amakusa in western Kyushu, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The new storm is slowly moving northward with gusts of up to 126 kilometers per hour and bringing heavy rain, the agency said, warning of high seas, landslides and floods.
