Student creates powerful photo series to protest Brock Turner’s release

Brock Turner — the convicted rapist who only served three months in jail — has inspired a series of devastating photos about sexual assault.

Ithaca College student Yana Mazurkevich just rolled out her second Brock Turner-inspired photo series, in conjunction with sexual assault advocacy group Current Solutions. The series, which Mazurkevich has dubbed “It Happens,” shows young women in their underwear, posing next to messages with quotes others have said about sexual assault....

Mazurkevich also said she wanted to push the envelope with the It Happens project by showing graphic depictions of sexual assault.

“I’m going for that ‘wow’ factor. I’ve had a few critics look at it, a few friends, family and others who I value the opinion of … and their first initial reaction is, ‘Oh, wow,'” Mazurkevich said. “In the second series, I really went for assault, like pure physical assault, and making it seem like it’s real. Just really in your face, like, I’m looking at a person assaulting another person.”
