(81,210 posts)Such a sad thing this is. What they were uniquely positioned to do - for genuine good, NOT just for a PR facelift (her "Just Say No" campaign comes to mind). It's only about what benefits them. If it benefits anybody else other than them, well, lucky break then. With them it's NEVER "America First." It's always "ME First." Unlike most of the rest of the country, people here see this clearly. The man many refer to as "Saint Ronnie" was NO saint, nor were his policies.
The republi-CON Party. They DON'T want to help you. They don't think they should have to. IGMFU. I Got Mine, F-U.

(10,252 posts)As a Buddhist, I have learned that the 3 great poisons are greed, anger (hate), and ignorance. It is these 3 characteristics that keep us locked in creating suffering for ourselves and others. Republicans seem to me to be highly motivated by the accumulation of wealth. They worship money and will do anything to get it at any cost. People don't matter, but god damn it, money is god. In their world, those with the most money, get the most respect, the most privilege, the most power, the best and first of everything. That's why I've come to the conclusion that the Republican party is a vast criminal enterprise, designed to steal tax payer money by hook or by crook.
Why do you think they want to privatize every gov service and program that isn't nailed down?

(20,219 posts)That is exactly what they are--poison.
And of the six lower worlds, they seem to favor Hunger, Anger and Animality.

(10,252 posts)Jealous gods, always picking fights to be the top dog and win at any costs with any lies and dirty tricks. Frequently motivated by envy. Deeply resentful at the success and good fortune of others.

Animality is the state of life where people fawn on those more powerful, and use and attack those less powerful. Rule of the Jungle.

(10,252 posts)The Gods - Total Pleasure, too busy and distracted to practice dharma. Karma eventually runs out and beings fall into a lower realm
The Ausuras - Jealous gods always at war with the gods, making trouble to be on top
Humans - Realm of Desire, but the only realm where dharma is practiced and enlightenment is possible
Animals - Stupidity
Hungry Ghosts - Greed, hunger, never satisfied, never content
Hell - Total Anger and Hatred

(20,219 posts)The Gods--or Rapture. Or Heaven.
Higher worlds: learning, realization, bodhisatthva, Buddhahood.
Different schools word it slightly differently, but the idea is the same. These are conditions of Life. Human beings bounce back and forth among these worlds; they are all contained within. Even Buddhahood contains the other 9, and vice-versa.
Because all worlds are contained within a single moment, the human being can practice to more consistently access the higher worlds contained the lower states.
The Buddha's greatness lies in his behavior as a human being.
"At all times, I think to myself, how can I enable all beings to quickly attain the body of the Buddha."--Lotus Sutra, last verse, chapter 16.

(81,210 posts)Yep. It DOES sum things up perfectly. They SNEER at the idea of compassion and empathy. And then they call themselves "Christian." The delusion is strong with them, Luke.

(58,785 posts)that doesn't mean they aren't moral by their standards. Their moral outlook is very similar to liberals' -- when both are dealing with those they consider "their" people.
The serious problem begins when conservatives look at "others," "outsiders." That's when a secondary moral code for treating outsiders and very different, plummeting levels of empathy click in. It does for liberals also, only usually the circle is much larger and the plummet less precipitous. Not always, as we see on this thread.
But conservatives are very much as capable of compassion as anyone else within their circles of acceptance, and some much more than some liberals. These unfortunate limitations may mean conservatives aren't as suited to living in diverse societies and dealing with eras of rampant change, but that doesn't mean liberals are all empathetic, compassionate angels.
Obviously.

(359 posts)Would he be on the record saying anything about gay rights if dear daughter Mary wasn't gay? Didn't think so.
calimary
(81,210 posts)Of course he wouldn't. He's the main fiend that sneers at empathy. Laughs and scoffs at it. With that charming curled lip of his. I swear - the CONS have a major league monopoly on despicable people.

(3,784 posts)You NEVER see a Republican take a stance contrary to what their Right-Wing Overlords demand of them until their stances affect them personally. For example, you never see a Republican talk about gun control UNTIL one of their kids gets shot (like some of the parents of the MANY school shootings who are now going around talking about, "I was a Republican who supported the 2nd Amendment.....until my kid got shot at school." Also, there are a few Republicans who are willing to stand up for LGBT rights, but guess who they are. They're the ones who have LGBT people in their immediate families.
I noticed this trend YEARS ago, and I often would ask rhetorically, "Why can these assholes not see the folly of their policies until it affects THEM?" Is that what it's going to take? Do we have to sit around and wait for ALL these assholes to have the bad results of their own policies come back to bite them in the ass? Because that's just going to take way too long. How about trying to imagine what it's like to be someone who isn't YOU for once? Nah, that would require THOUGHT, and we all know Republicans aren't capable of that.

(14,563 posts)You even see is on a smaller scale all day.
Within a one block radius of our house, we have the normal amount of "conservatives" and they all have those things that are just different because it interests them in some way.
One neighbor, a hard "fiscal conservative" type, several years ago was talking to me about the need for the school district to upgrade athletic facilities because his sons were in sports, "as a fiscal conservative I feel this is important enough to justify tax dollars used." I was talking to him recently and brought this up, and his sons are no longer in sports, but the arts, and guess what, now he feels it is justified to use tax payer dollars to upgrade facilities for the arts.
Can't even begin to say how many conversations I have had like this just on local stuff ...
Just completely lacking in self awareness and in their own world.

(3,427 posts)Republicans will admit that climate change is real
...if they happen to live in a coastal area that now floods several times a year because of rising sea levels.
But if they live somewhere else, the idea of doing anything about it is part of a liberal conspiracy, a "radical climate change agenda."
