ST. LUCE COUNTY, Fla. - Investigators said an overnight fire was intentionally set at the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, the same mosque attended by Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said 911 received a call at 12:31 a.m. that the place of worship was on fire.
The mosque has made national headlines because it served as the place of worship of Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen. It was also where Syrian suicide bomber Moner Mohammad Abu Salha worshipped.
Several investigators, including the states fire marshals office and the sheriffs office arson investigators, were called to the scene.
At a 6:30 a.m. news conference, Major David Thompson with the St. Lucie County Sheriffs Office said the fire was intentionally set.
Thompson said video captured at the mosque showed a person approaching the east side of the building just moments before a flash was seen and the fire started.
Chopper 5 flew over the scene and showed there was substantial damage to the building.

32-Year-Old Man Arrested in Connection to Arson at Florida Mosque, Police Say
By JULIA JACOBO - Sep 14, 2016, 7:54 PM ET
Florida police have arrested a man who allegedly set fire to the mosque there and officials say the suspect had a number of anti-Islamic social media posts.
The St. Lucie Sheriff's Office arrested 32-year-old Port St. Lucie resident Joseph Michael Schreiber Wednesday afternoon after multiple tips pointed to him, Maj. Dave Thompson said.
According to police, just past midnight on Monday, emergency responders received a call reporting a fire at the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, attended by Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen's family. The fire was immediately believed by authorities to have been set deliberately.

After receiving more than one tip that directly identified Schreiber as a suspect, police obtained a search warrant for his home, where they found a motorcycle consistent with the one in the surveillance video, Thompson said. Investigators also say they collected evidence at his home that linked him to the crime, police said, but did not elaborate on what that evidence was.
