For the first time 538 has her at below a 60% chance of winning this election and the downward trend is not real encouraging
right now. She needs to turn this around like ... immediately.
Personally, I don't see how the polls keep changing so often because I rather assumed that support for either candidate is pretty well baked in at this point. I wonder if this swing represents independents indecision?
Yeah, yeah, I know: electoral college and all but...
This is scary stuff

I do agree she has to show well at the debate.

I wouldn't be surprised if the misogynistic, sexist, sorry excuse we have for a media in this country, tries to characterize Hillary as "angry, doesn't smile, defensive, talks too loud", and all the other not so subtle sexist slurs they have used in the past.
The difference this time is the media will be made to look like fools if they take that route, since the contrast between the two candidates cannot be covered over by their white-washing of trump, when both candidates are on the same stage

(2,108 posts)What's more critical and less in her control is if the pundits recognize and report that she did well in the debates.
That's iffy. The bar is set so low for him. He just needs to stand upright and form words (not even sentences, just words).
On the other hand, she might cough or breath in the wrong moment and then all hope is lost.

For Hillary Clinton, it would be nice if Donald Trump stumbled on a major policy issuefor example, insisting that Russia would never invade Ukraine because his buddy Vlad told him that. When the moderator then pointed out that Russia did this two years ago, Trump would look ignorant. But Clinton can't count on a stumble of this magnitude. Instead, her best strategy is to act presidential and calm, but get under Trump's skin and make him explode. The image of a calm Clinton and a fuming Trump would stick with everyone. What Trump needs most of all is to dominate everyone. If Clinton starts out by dominating him, he is going to react badly. That is what she needs.

(10,437 posts)of issues the president faces and what government does...so he will resort to narcissistic blasts at hillary spouting lies and insults...I highly doubt we will see any effort by the debate moderator to reign in trump...and why I will be surprise to see trump step out on stage with hillary....
in a clear debate, hillary mops the floor with trump....his supporters want him to name call and insult hillary...thats all they care about as substance of policy and truth really don't matter to those people at all...
as for the "closing" of the race....its mostly a media fabrication and I think most of them have had enough of trump's antics and out right lies....but it works for democrats very well to have this race appear to be "close"....its a great motivator to get our voters off their asses and VOTE

(112 posts)The only problem is that people see what they want to see. Donald supporters will see a donald win and Hillary supporters will see a HRC win. And the press wants to keep the race going. So, even if she does "mop the floor" with him, over half the press will still say 'he' looked presidential.

(112 posts)around the net (can't recall where) say that debates don't move the electorate. I don't know how true that is but hope it is not true.
The only hope we have is that the sane people in this country outnumber the crazies who want to destroy our country entirely. The unknown is the size of the group who will vote for a third party as a protest and, in so doing, hand the election to trump. Scary as can be.

(10,162 posts)bullshit panel asking her about everything, why would anyone worry about how Hillary will do debating someone who is intellectually a 7th grader?
She will crucify him without breaking a sweat, just like she did with Trey Gowdy.

(63,172 posts)Unfortunately, the same media that called Gore "aggressive" for stepping forward to shake Dubya's hand will be ready to pounce on any statement or gesture by Clinton that be spun to make her seem harsh or cold or uppity.
She will destroy him in the debates, and the media will be sure to spin it to his advantage.

(10,857 posts)You only need to remember a few salient facts to understand why Mrs. Clinton should not and will not "win" the debates:
* Conservatives are, for the most part, not very bright;
* People who are not very bright are especially vulnerable to the "backfire effect," in which people believe lies and disinformation more when it is refuted by a "liberal" person;
* Trump's best chance to win the election in is in the debates, where he spews a bunch of self-serving bullshit and has Mrs. Clinton refute it.
We're already registered and ready to go in this election. The people who are not are stupid, apathetic people who are waiting for a sign from baby Jesus to tell them what to think. Mrs. Clinton can motivate them by playing to us. So she just has to look Presidential, stick to her own platform, and let Trump be a moron without directly confronting him.
If she doesn't, things will turn against us in one hell of a hurry.
