A Trump campaign chair in Ohio says there was 'no racism' before Obama

Donald Trump’s campaign chair in a prominent Ohio county has claimed there was “no racism” during the 1960s and said black people who have not succeeded over the past half-century only have themselves to blame.

Kathy Miller, chair of the Republican nominee’s campaign in Mahoning County, who is white, made the remarks during a taped interview with the Guardian’s Anywhere but Washington series of election videos.

“If you’re black and you haven’t been successful in the last 50 years, it’s your own fault. You’ve had every opportunity, it was given to you,” she said.

“You’ve had the same schools everybody else went to. You had benefits to go to college that white kids didn’t have. You had all the advantages and didn’t take advantage of it. It’s not our fault, certainly.”

Miller also called the Black Lives Matter movement “a stupid waste of time” and said lower voter turnout among African Americans could be related to “the way they’re raised”.

Deplorable.

Scrubbing voters in predominantly AA neighborhoods off the registers. Or closing more polling places to make voting more difficult. Or , etc etc etc.

Not that she'd admit that such devices would cause "lower turnout".

I am appalled. I'm not even sure it's right that this garbage is being reported. I'm afraid that reporting it implicitly condones that sick way of thinking. This person is a sorry excuse for a human being. Yuck.

It is harder for minorities to succeed in a lot of ways obviously (for anyone with a working brain).

That is why when they do succeed we actually should give them more credit.

The closer that we get to the election, the more the Trump campaign will abandon dog whistles and be offering directly racist rhetoric. This is a paralleling the rise of the Nazi regime.

I left a long time ago but still return regularly to visit family. I've done a lot of traveling and lived all around the US. But I've never been anywhere where I've heard the n-word used so often. It always shocks me a little to hear the blatantly racist way they talk about blacks in the most casual conversations. (Apparently they think I must be on board with that since I'm white.) The assertion that there is no racism, especially around Mahoning County, is ridiculous.
