(453 posts)Mike Pence saying that is the dumbest thing I have heard from him. That's saying a lot. Essentially he is saying lets ignore the problem and pretend it doesn't exist. It does, it's here. We have ignored this problem for 30 years.
How is it possible that an armed terrorist can be apprehended and taken into custody, but Black men are not only presumed guilty, but presumed a threat.
I am not black. I can never pretend to understand anyone else's experience. However, when so many people are saying that there is a problem how can we ignore it.
Yes it is important to say Black Lives Matter. It is also important to explain to other white people why saying All Lives Matter is about the same as saying nothing at all.
We need to stand together.

Nina Turner let her have it. I wish I could find the video.

(9,527 posts)I think that the issue is societal wide. It happens that cops have guns and so the fleeting thought that the random black guy might be a threat turns deadly.
Repeated studies have shown that people who view a black face followed by a picture of a tool or a weapon are more likely to mistake a tool for a weapon or take longer to correctly identify it correctly. But while we may have that bias at the larger societal level, we don't find ourselves in those situations where we are expecting potential trouble and/or have a gun.
That isn't to excuse the unjust killings, but I think it changes how we have to approach fixing it. Instead of just trying to change the police institution, we need to start much earlier so the same biases aren't present when people apply to become cops.
Yes cops have their own separate problems with violence and resort to it too quickly, but I think on the specific issue of race, the problem starts before people become cops. It's in Reagan talking about welfare queens taking, it's in the early 90s Clinton talking about super predators (I believe she's legitimately changed on that). It's in our lack of integration and in our continued othering of minorities. Fixing that is bigger than just the local cops.

(17,199 posts)of the passive voice in saying "mistakes were made" to excuse the killing of African-Americans by racist cops, I think we can all agree was DEPLORABLE.

(17,199 posts)Pence's despicable comments were reported yesterday, and nothing more has been made of them.
He wants to "set aside" any discussion of institutional racism, just as he wants to "set aside" its victims by referring to their deaths as "mistakes." Where is the outrage?

(61,692 posts)Nothing to see here. Problem solved. No need to talk about it any more, it's just a few mistakes that are being made.
(The arrogance, lack of compassion, stupidity, sexism, and racism are stunning.)
