But the cops havent finished with the innocent man and what happens next is truly astonishing given hed done nothing wrong in the first place.
With the Tahoes recording devices rolling, these sheriffs deputies who apparently had nothing better to do than waste taxpayer money to intimidate and threaten an innocent individual conspire to fabricate charges.
Cannick cites court documents in the matter, which state:
During the course of the next several minutes, the deputies on scene conspired to concoct a citable offense against Mr. Sheppard. These law enforcement officials attempted to justify Deputy Plunketts actions, ex post facto. Most critically, Deputy Hanson and Deputy Ramirez drafted a citation that was ultimately signed by Deputy Plunkett. Neither Deputy Hanson nor Deputy Ramirez was willing to personally sign the citation, after engaging in a lengthy discussion concerning the contents of said citation. As she was attempting to creatively fashion charges to be brought against Mr. Sheppard within the aforementioned citation, Deputy Hanson stated, please, just let me taser him.

(11,996 posts)with S&W MP9s, totally dfferent trigger...
In 2014, "after substantial adoption of the new weapon in patrol settings," the report noted, accidental discharges in the field shot up by more than 500% -- from three in 2012 to 19.
Sixteen of the accidents involved deputies armed with handguns, the report found. Fifteen of those were carrying the Smith & Wesson. So far in 2015, LASD deputies have been involved in 18 such shootings; 14 involved the Smith & Wesson, according to the report."
And these fuckers think it's fine to be pointing their sidearm at you?!?
Holy shit.

It "helps" to be white.
It also helps if you don't suffer from mental illness or some other physical disabilities.

(6,324 posts)When people are confrontational during a traffic stop it's almost always a sign of bigger issues. Or sometimes you have just pulled over an asshole.
He started giving the deputy orders, refused to answer questions about what he was doing there, and started to drop his hand out of sight when the deputy grabbed it. Then in the middle of a tense situation starts messing with his headset knowing moving his hands will make the deputy jumpy.
Had he just said "hello deputy, I am a private investigator on the job my credentials are in my wallet" this would have gone down a whole different way. Instead he immediately barks an order to deputy and sends the whole stop off in another direction.
It's almost like he wanted this kind of reaction and had the camera ready to see how much he could bait the deputy in to.

(17,302 posts)Had he just said "hello deputy, I am a private investigator on the job my credentials are in my wallet" this would have gone down a whole different way.
Um, maybe? Providing the PI didn't actually reach for his wallet. We saw how that scenario ended fatally a few weeks ago for another African-American motorist.
I think the cop handed so many aspect of this incorrectly. He was escalating the situation with contradictory commands, all with the intent of asserting his authority without respect to the driver's civil rights. I was curious as to whether the police officer is still on the job so I clicked the link to find out (I noticed the original video was dated 2014). Here's what I was surprised to read:
Despite the telling video footage showing all these allegations to be true a jury last week found in favor of the sheriffs department.

So was the jury made up of a bunch of incompetents or is there more to this story that what we've seen here?
Lee-Lee
(6,324 posts)And had little sympathy for him.
You don't bark an order at a cop approaching your vehicle as the first thing you say to him when he walks up, especially telling him what to do with his gun. Likely that agencies protocol for approaching a vehicle you can't see inside of is gun drawn and pointed down until you can asses who/what is inside.
They probably articulated the reasons that they acted as they did and how his actions and attitude resulted in the escalation and the jury saw him for what it was.
His statements about just getting out of court on similar issues are telling- how do you end up in court for the same stuff so often on civil actions? It's like he got what he wanted to pursue a lawsuit...
True Dough
(17,302 posts)as you define it, look at how the cop continued to point the gun at the driver's head well after the driver removed his earpiece and placed his hands back in front of the open window.
The other police officers did not respond similarly and the senior officer had to step in to get the first cop to lower the firearm. He is not fit for the job.
Lee-Lee
(6,324 posts)But after watching it 3 times I get the feeling the driver was almost doing his best to provoke just that response.
I'm not sure what that agencies protocol was, but in my old department I would have had him exit the vehicle and move to the rear of it and then either cuffed him of just covered him until backup came. The sitting there holding his arm in place was bad tactics for many reasons.
His sudden movement to the earpiece is enough to justify holding him at gunpont at that point. He is being belligerent and uncooperative during the stop and quite often people intent on reaching for a weapon or considering it will make other movements to test the officers reaction or throw them off. Even after he takes it off and the officer is ordering him to put his hands on the wheel he is not putting his hands on the wheel but arguing.
An asshole trying to provoke a response met a poorly trained deputy.

(11,996 posts)Cop or not, that fucker points a Beretta at YOUR head for NO justifiable reason, I'd understand you being a bit pissed too.
Mr Shaky points one of their new MPs at you, you've got about what, 5-6lbs of twitch between you and the afterlife?
Screw that.
Are you blind? did you not see i the deputies eyes he want to murder this guy, did you no review the article Come on man get a grip.
Lee-Lee
(6,324 posts)Not knowing what's up with this guy or why he is being so confrontational and belligerent with him.
He needs more training for sure. And may need to reasses his career choice.
I see an Angry Cops willing to kill someone if given the chance, i also see other cops standing around doing nothing and then they got together to try and find a fake charges did i miss something?

(13,390 posts)How about we give all of the lists of advice more honest titles. What to do when a cop has a gun to your head.
Or maybe cops should be trained to not be so afraid of blackness that they pull their guns instantly.
But as we see here, no matter how trigger happy a cop seems, the responsibility is all on people of color. This is the real summation of what is being demanded of people of color.
In order to prevent bad behavior on the part of police:
- always do what they say
- don't talk back
- don't question their threatening behavior
- don't resist manhandling even if it is just a touch on your arm
- don't run away- even if you fear for your life
This video makes it clear to me that the fact that police encounters demand different responses for people of color in order to protect their lives is not being discussed with honesty.
