My theory about today's conservatives.

Only time will tell if this is true. It would take a look into old KGB files.

My theory is that the modern day conservative movement in the U.S. actually was started by the boffins of Dzerzhinsky Square. Early on, during the Lenin years they mounted an intelligence operation that had the Western Powers paying for the Soviets' clandestine and not so clandestine export of their revolution. It was extremely successful, only it was shutdown by a paranoid Stalin.

I think this operation, then called "The Trust" was modified and restarted during the Andropov or Brezhnev years. Given that conservatives were so gullible (especially the christian ones) it just might work. Propaganda against the Carter Administration by making it feel patriotic. American Patriots (the self-styled ones) would be useful idiots for the Soviet Union.

The thing is that people like Limbaugh showed that tearing America apart could be hugely profitable as well. The operation took on a life of its own and outlasted the Soviet Union.

If I had 5 minutes with Putin I'd ask him who Dick Armey's case officer was. The timing is about right. It might also explain the relationship between Trump and Putin. The Soviet Union may be gone, but the Great Game lives on forever.

I have some reading to do.

The way it looked to me, the neo-cons had a post-Soviet field day with Yeltzin. Putin came in and began to put a stop to it, with his own brand, of course.

Putin certainly does these sorts of dirty tricks - he has his troll army, with offices in St. Peter, working day and night towards his nefarious ends online.
