NASA kicked up an internet firestorm with its assertion that the tilting of Earth's axis has caused the traditional astrological signs to shift slightly. Why you shouldn't worry if you are no longer a Taurus.
By Weston Williams, Staff SEPTEMBER 27, 2016
All over the world, people check their horoscopes to see what's in store for them for the day.
For most, it is an entertaining, meaningless diversion, but a few genuinely believe in their predictions based on their astrological signs sign.
But NASA is causing waves in the astrological community for its recent suggestion that the astrological signs constellations that are at a certain point in the sky for certain point in the year have changed as the Earth's axis has shifted over the centuries. The uproar was such that NASA's tumblr felt compelled to release an explanation for the story, emphasizing that astrology is a pseudoscience.
The root of the uproar was apparently an article in Cosmopolitan magazine that claimed that a NASA article had shaken up the zodiac calendar, and that 86 percent of the star signs people think that they were born under were now incorrect. NASA's "correction" of the zodiac calendar also included a 13th constellation, Ophiuchus, adding further fuel to the viral wildfire that quickly spread across the internet.

My version just trips off the tongue better, I think. Plus, then there's that the accent belongs on the semi-penultimate syllable.

(61,690 posts)The 13th sign is unique in that unlike the 12 signs we're already familiar with, Ophiuchus is associated with a real person named Imhotep, also known as Serpentarius, or Aesclepius by the ancient Greeks. But we'll stick with Ophiuchus, so as not to get confused. (Honestly, I'm already confused.) Anyhow, Imhotep lived in the 27th century BCE in Egypt. Ophiuchus, meanwhile, sits behind the sun and represents people born from Nov. 29 through Dec. 17.
Something else that makes this sign so special is that contrary to every other sign, it does not have an opposite thus, there aren't polar experiences. Furthermore, just as the sign itself falls between Scorpio and Sagittarius, so too do its traits. That means there's good news if you learn you're an Ophiuchan, the sign of the woman snake handler: People find you very desirable, and good luck follows you.
What else do we know about Ophiuchus? Well, apparently you Ophiuchans progress well through your life, and authority looks upon you positively (even though you refuse to blindly follow it and always seek the truth). You have a thirst for wisdom and knowledge, and would apparently make a great architect. You're known for your flamboyant sense of style and you love to dress in bright colors. Also, fun fact: Your lucky number is 12. Not 13. That would make too much sense. Ophiuchus is curious, open to change, a true visionary, and has a great sense of humor. Not too shabby, right?
The 13th sign is also a very passionate one, which as many of us passionate people can confirm is a double-edged sword. (I can definitely agree with that.) So, while Ophiuchus has many wonderful qualities, it is also the jealous type, secretive, and arrogant, with a wild temper. As an introvert, this sign enjoys time alone and in fact avoids social situations where they know they can't dominate. If Ophiuchus fears or mistrusts you, they will shun you. You don't want to get on their bad side: Between the air of mystery surrounding them and their ability to fool and bring down just about anyone, Ophiuchus is not to be toyed with.

After I saw a few other horoscopes put me under a different sign, I visited a website that clarified the matter by place and exact time of birth. I was actually born under the other sign by less than an hour!
Not that any of it means anything, of course!

Normally, I wouldn't give a crap, but I've recently become a Sagittarius, and Sagittariuses (Sagittarii?) are very volatile.

(38,301 posts)Nancy Reagan, who died Sunday at age 94, played an outsized role as first lady during her husband's years in the White House.
She was known as his fierce protector and perhaps his closest advisor. When his presidency was jeopardized by the Iran-Contra affair in the mid-1980s, she took a decisive role in imposing new leadership around him.
But she was also known for a decidedly unconventional aspect of White House life: using an astrologer. Here's the story from The Times archives.
