New committee seeks to remove confederate statue from downtown (LA)

Updated: Wednesday, September 28 2016 6:48 AM EDT

A new effort is under way to remove the General Mouton statue from downtown Lafayette ...

"We are taxpayers, and the property ultimately is owned by taxpayers," said Fred Prejean, chairman of Move the Mindset. "The property where the statue is located now. So, there is a significant number of taxpayers who would like to see the statue moved to a more appropriate place."

Since 1922, the statue of Alfred Mouton has been at the corner of Jefferson Street and Lee Avenue ...

Getting the structure taken down won't as simple as just grabbing a bulldozer, it'll take a city council vote and legal action to move the Mouton statue from its longtime home ...

Never heard of him. I wonder how a statue of a Confederate general got onto a building in Los Angeles? Seems so odd.

Lafayette, Louisiana specifically. General Jean Jacques Alexandre Mouton was a native of Lafayette killed in the defense of Shreveport.

I respectfully disagree with some here who look for the destruction of all confederate memorials and statues but I totally support relocating them to areas where the are a more historical artifact.

This is a very rare instance where the person honored was from the town and died near there. He died defending his home. Unfortunately he did so supporting slavery so his statue should be moved to a museum or better yet, his grave site.
